Sherry Johnston has two pain pumps implanted in her body to deliver medication because she suffers a rare condition involving scurvy and chronic pelvic pain from prior medical surgeries, Butler said. She was receiving professional pain relief treatment but the problems arose when her insurer refused to pay for the medication, Butler said.

"People want to think she was just a drug addict," he said. "She made a poor judgment choice. But what do you do?"

Assistant District Attorney Richard K. Allen said prosecutors considered Johnston's criminal-free background as well as her physical problems in agreeing to the mitigated sentence.

"Rehabilitation would be the goal," he said.

The case against Johnston began last September when investigators intercepted a package containing 179 OxyContin pills. The suspects who were arrested agreed to become informants.

Police said Johnston set up a meeting with one of the informants, who bought 10 pills of 80-milligram OxyContin using $800 provided by investigators. A second purchase was made the following day, and a third purchase in November was videotaped by police, authorities said.

3. That explains why she was using but not why she was selling
Oxycontin is generic and not terribly expensive unless you buy it on the street.

8. Her Insurance wouldn't pay for her pain medicine.
So she was probably selling to get the meds she needed. She could take her profit as pills instead of cash. This way her medicine is pretty much free. Some people just make up their own prescription plan.

11. It's silly to risk life, reputation and freedom
trying to save that little money.

Again, it explained why she was using but not why she was selling.

Selling to save that little money was insane.

13. Not everyone has unlimited income. For some people robbing Peter to pay Paul is the only way to -
survive. So who gets the IOU's landlord, utilities, grocery store, or the doctors? It doesn't matter how little they cost if you don't have that money. What makes those generics affordable are prescription plans. Which she didn't have. A few years back I had to take pain killers. The name brand was like 300.00. The generic was 150.00. To some people that's a lot of money they just don't have.
