The Obama administration announced it will soon give $1.2 billion in federal grants for applying electronic health records technology.

“This ain’t government control,” Biden told more than 50 people gathered before a panel discussion at Mt. Sinai Hospital on Chicago’s West Side. “We are trying to modernize. All of this sounds pretty fancy but it’s about modernizing the system. Electronic health records can help reduce medical errors, make healthcare more efficient and improve the quality of medical care for all Americans.” ”

Biden and his people were at Mount Sinai this morning where they met with medical professionals from Northwestern University and Mount Sinai.

1. How about fixing education so people don't make mistakes?
I guess that ain't fancy enough.

Biden is a scarecrow.

3. The only way to stop mistakes is to fix human brains
and that is impossible.

Educated, highly intelligent people make mistakes - it is part of the human condition.

6. And the saying goes for computing, Garbage In, Garbage Out.
Throwing a hig tech solution at it when the Government can't even get real time unemployment figures is nuts.

How about going after the low hanging, but very important fruit before inserting more complexity into an already incomprehensible healthcare system.

I think you get my drift.

7. I am aware of actual cases of electronic medical data
and it helps enormously.

So, banks operate exclusively with electronic data, and I don't see any problems there.

16. I guess it didn't help with the missing white house emails.
Or the thousands of SEC case files that were stored in WTC 7 on 9/11.

And if you think that comparing the Banks "Success" using electronic data exclusively, I think you are barking up the wrong tree. It only facilitated quicker, more efficient way to promote and continue fraudulent activity.

Are you for getting rid of Libraries and putting everything in the Library of Congress on the Web? Just think about the implications of that sort of scenario for one moment..

20. Not at all.
I much prefer books to something like kindle.

I was talking about experiences of electronic medical records, and as far as account servicing is concerned, banks work very well. There is the opportunity for FRAUD in everything, even baksheesh cold hard cash. It has to be regulated.

4. They should spend $100 million to write a Free and Open Source Software health records system
That doctors, clinics, and hospitals could install and use free of software license fees.

Otherwise, a lot of this is a giveaway to Oracle, IBM, and Microsoft and a bunch of proprietary health records software vendors whose systems won't talk to each other except with great difficulty, consulting fees, and customization projects.

5. I agree
and I wrote one for my own use, with Paradox. In 1994. Cost $120 and hours of work. But every time there's some change I can change it myself for free. Keeps data for records and billing.

19. I would like to see a journalist follow the money on this one.
I agree with you that it's likely a boon for some proprietary software vendors rather than principally an improvement in records management.

21. Doesn't it make it easier to hack if it's open source though?
How would you handle the security on a project like that?

11. Remember this thread
If the data is computerized and that data gets hacked (which you can bet someone will try), don't say you weren't warned. As I put in another thread, if 150 million credit card numbers can get stolen by one man, think how accessible the data will be when it's in the hands of every health care provider in the country.

10. I will do everything within my power to keep my name and medical info out of govt. hands
Once it's gone, it's gone for good.

It takes an extraordinary lack of imagination, or naive trust in the competence and moral discipline of strangers, to not see what trouble this can bring.
