Iran lifts ban on nuclear inspectors
Source: Boston Globe/AP

Iran has lifted a yearlong ban and allowed UN inspectors to visit a nearly completed nuclear reactor and has granted greater monitoring rights at another atomic site, diplomats said yesterday.

International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors visited the nearly finished Arak heavy water reactor last week, the diplomats said. They added that Iran agreed last week to agency requests to expand monitoring of the Natanz uranium enrichment site, which produces nuclear fuel that can be further enriched into warhead material.

The diplomats demanded anonymity because their information was confidential.

Iran is softening its position days before the release of a new report on its facilities from the international watchdog group. It is unclear whether the increased access is an attempt to influence how much unsubstantiated information would be released in the report.

4. True. It's a heady feeling.
But if one side is determined to have a war, a war will ensue, despite all the best efforts of the diplomats, viz. the tenures of Bush I and II.
It's like "bipartisanship" when one side clearly wants to sabotage the other.
It's nice to have adults like Barack and Hillary in charge of US foreign policy. It builds confidence among all.

2. It's about time we got some good news out of Iran.
This does very much to prove to the world that Iran can be trusted with nuclear energy technology. That will do very much to reduce the worlds Resistance to Iran's uses of nuclear energy technology. This is very good news indeed.

7. They can't be trusted with elections, but this proves they can be trusted with nuclear technology?
They blatantly and violently screwed their OWN PEOPLE over, and you think the rest of the world should trust them?

Oooookkkaaaaayyyy.

9. Khamenei is already walking the thin line over the election.
He's also already issued an edict against nuclear weapons. Calling them Unislamic or against Islam. It's a Bidah from the Sunah. If he's found to be in violation of that. The Council of the Wise will have no choice but to remove him as Supreme Leader. They would Impeach him with the difference in his own words and deeds.

3. This was a very good move on the part of Iran.
I hope that this is just the beginning because there is still a LONG way to go. But it was certainly a good step in the right direction.

6. Looks like gaming the system to minimize sanctions or bombing
These people are buying time until they have the bomb. Then they can sabre rattle with credibility.

8. I guess we do still have a few realists left around here.
You'd think progressives would be naturally suspicious of power-crazy ultra-rightwing fundie ayatollahs grasping for nukes...but as the Iran threads here consistently show, you'd be wrong.

Good post.
