George W. Bush vets dismiss Tom Ridge claims
Source: Politico

Top officials from the George W. Bush White House are disputing claims in former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge’s coming book that they pressured him to adjust the terror threat level for political gain.

“We went over backwards repeatedly and with great discipline to make sure politics did not influence any national security and homeland security decisions,” former White House chief of staff Andy Card told POLITICO. “The clear instructions were to make sure politics never influenced anything.”

Card insisted that he does not “remember the president ever overturning a recommendation” from DHS and NSC on any adjustment to the threat level.

Card also disputed Ridge’s claim about a plan to specifically integrate DHS and FEMA disaster relief prior to Katrina.

Lots of I don't remember that happening or I am surprised that Tom Ridge is saying that
now because I don't recall him having a problem back then.

Lying liars trying to cover their asses ..... BTW way to take a stand now Tom where the f***
were you in 2004? After the republicans in Warren County, Ohio called a "terror warning"
so they could count the votes in private.

5. "The clear instructions were..." Translation:
"We issued a strongly-worded memo to cover our ass. When we issued the memo we were already flagrantly violating its principles."

Card's weasel words and legalistic, non-denial denials are a clear admission of guilt, IMO.

I hope his book sinks like a stone just like little Scotty's did after the initially "boost" from the belated confessions dies down.

22. I wish no one but a couple of public libraries would buy either book.
These "tell alls" do not really tell all. And what they do tell could have changed the course of history for the infinitely better, if these people had opened their mouths at the time.

Instead, they stayed silent until they thought they could get some personal advantage. Powell and Tenet, too.

As far as I am concerned, all these Republican authors are turds.

13. I hear that Tom Ridge has backed off of his claims, but too late.

This morning he NPR quoted him as saying he fought against elevating the alerts-- and won. I'm thinking that Ridge received a few terrorist threats last night.

I'll have to see what his book says, but he said this morning is different than what he is saying today.

17. Politics influenced EVERYTHING they did. . .
The Bush Criminal Enterprise hardly did anything without gauging whether they could get away with it politically or not.

And Andy Card played a big part in this Enterprise. For a humorous take on his role, view this: <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dtf_Gxy9ZRY>

18. I thought one of the problems with Katrina relief WAS that DHS had been integrated with
Edited on Fri Aug-21-09 10:28 AM by No Elephants
with disaster relief before Katrina. As though Katrina were a terrorist attack, they secured the area, not letting in things like food, water, ice, etc.

A friend left Jefferson Parish and went to Baton Rouge. There, in Baton Rouge, trucks with water and food sat, not allowed to go any further. Water/ice trucks got diverted as far as Massachusetts, where they sat, their drivers sleeping in them while collecting overtime until the matter hit the press (fair to the driver, of course, just not to the taxpayer).

Another friend who happened to travel to Houston found volunteer workers, including doctors, sitting in a hotel lobby there, doing nothing and frustrated. They, too, had been diverted from Louisiana.

A third friend went with volunteers from Northeast animal shelters and animal rescue centers. They were not allowed to enter NOLA, but were diverted to other states hit by Katrina.

And that is only what I know from friends who experienced these things first hand.

We were told that kind of thing happened because of the consolidating of disaster relief with HHS and not enough thought had been given to the differences between a disaster caused by a terrorist attack and a disaster caused by a force of nature. So, how can Andrew Card say there was no plan before Katrina?

On the other hand, maybe he's right. Maybe they just did it without a plan, much like they invaded Iraq without a plan.

Of course they need to do this, they know how bad it looks otherwise. Their cohorts in the media have also been down playing this, but, we all know the truth.
