Protests planned for Hawaii's 50th anniversary

HONOLULU – Protesters will march the streets and Hawaiian chants will echo from the sprawling lawn of Iolani Palace on Hawaii's 50th anniversary of statehood, as high-minded panelists ponder the islands' future at a daylong conference.

While lacking much in the way of public parties or parades, Hawaii's official statehood day festivities will feature entertainment by local musicians and panel discussions emphasizing tourism's future, alternative energy and Native Hawaiian rights.

About 1,000 demonstrators who would rather see Hawaii's independence restored are expected to rally outside the conference at the Hawaii Convention Center.

"We want to show how U.S. imperialism has spread across the Pacific and across the world," said Lynette Cruz, an organizer of the Hawaiian Independence Action Alliance. "It'll be fun."

The protesters will be allowed inside the convention center lobby, but they can't get into the individual conference rooms without purchasing a $30 ticket....

2. Oh, Lordy
I was sure it was going to be birthers demonstrating against the evil, communistic, so-called "state" of Hawaii.

5. I'm sure the racist Birthers would rather that Hawaii secede.

Look at how having a black-- "mixed race" president has unhinged them.

8. Really?
Do who have any idea what imperialism has done to most of the world?

Should they be grateful that their nice islands were invaded by europeans and turned into an over-developed playground for tourists?

How many golf courses can you fit on a small island nation anyway?

as well as the local village idiots.

11. But that's not the point.
Saying that Hawaii should not be a US sate will only add more ammunition to the birther's movement. The issue of US imperialism is a very valid one but I think that's an issue that should be dealt with another day, not now.

13. What does this have to do with the birthers?
Edited on Fri Aug-21-09 11:25 AM by Cal Carpenter
Aside from the previous poster's extremely insulting comparison to them, I don't see the connection.

Eta: the issue of US and European imperialism is a MUCH MORE IMPORTANT ONE than the handful of nutjobs in the 'birther' category. Just had to add that.

Instead of "this is huge," they sometimes write "this is hugh" and follow it with a bunch of exclamation points that degenerate into 1's when their fingers slip on the cap key.

Americans? And then they would have to give Australia and New Zealand back to native peoples as well. My point is that you can't change history. What happened happened and there isn't much we can do about it now.

Edited for typo.

16. We did give the canal back to Panama,
which was the context of Hayakawa's quip.

But we didn't give Panama back to Colombia. Maybe because it wasn't ours to give. Legally, that is.

28. There's a big difference there.
India was a colony. If you go by the analogy of India, remember that the United Sates was a collection of British colonies too, then we gained independence just like India and Pakistan did. All the while European settlers committed genocide and ethnic cleansing against Native Americans and enslaved Africans. It was quite a history.

are the birthers behind this? Maybe they think if Hawaii's statehood goes away they can finally go after Obama for not being a US Citizen?
