Death Panel Myth Creator Betsy Mccaughey Resigns
Edited on Fri Aug-21-09 04:19 PM by hedgehog
Source: Washington Independent

Betsy McCaughey — an outspoken proponent of the myth that Democrats’ health care reform proposals will lead to the creation of “death panels,” as well as a former lieutenant governor of New York and adjunct fellow at the Hudson Institute — has stepped down from her position as a director of Cantel Medical Corp., which bills itself as a “leading provider of infection prevention and control products in the healthcare market.”

From a press release:

CANTEL MEDICAL CORP. (NYSE: CMN – News) announced that on August 20, 2009 it received a letter of resignation from Ms. Elizabeth McCaughey as a director of the Company. Ms. McCaughey, who had served as a director since 2005, stated that she was resigning to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest during the national debate over healthcare reform.

McCaughey found herself the subject of widespread ridicule after an appearance on “The Daily Show” Thursday, during which host Jon Stewart aggressively challenged her positions on health care reform.

5. Supposedly she resigned before the show aired
Either she realized she'd made a real mug of herself or the company accepted a pre-dated letter to allow her to save some face and pretend her laughable performance wasn't the reason.

Whatever the reason, she's a joke. Last night confirmed it.

36. yeah, I like how these shills NEVER talk about how the insurance companies
get between doctors and their patients.....how insurance companies NEVER interfere with the quality of care provided to patients. She says 46% of patients are under cared for. What she fails to say is that it is directly due to doctors knowing what will and won't get covered by insurance companies either by previous experience or by trying to get pre-qualification from companies. Lying BITCH!

81. Who's Who of secure investments
Even jaded "myself" was caught off guard by the number of agri-business giants who've openly invested in the mis-information curtain.

Just an observation, but one common link to many of the notables is their business's extensive use of scientific laboratories. I expect the investment groups use edge-of-the-envelope algorithms, kind of a lab of mathematicians. Am I being unusually paranoid or does there seem to be a direct association between what is considered the domain of university sponsored facilities and hugely powerful private business? Maybe even major "minds" and major political power players.

Is this Sci-Fi or what, Igor?

I think it's part of the framing and management of political debate in this country. The 'journalists' on the cable networks know which side of their bread is buttered. If they get uppity and probe too deeply or ask the 'wrong' questions, it's likely they'll be looking for another job rather promptly. Look at what happened to Phil Donahue - who hosted one of the highest rated programs on MSNBC - during the propaganda campaign that attempted to manufacture consent for the invasion of Iraq.

But it is definitely an indication of the sorry state of journalism in the U.S.

69. He's not a clown. He's The Court Jester. Big difference.
Jester
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

<snip>

Political significance

In societies where freedom of speech was not recognized as a right, the court jester—precisely because anything he said was by definition "a jest" and "the uttering of a fool"—could speak frankly on controversial issues<1> in a way in which anyone else would have been severely punished for. Monarchs understood the usefulness of having such a person at their side.<1> Still, even the jester was not entirely immune from punishment, and he needed to walk a thin line and exercise careful judgment in how far he might go - which required him to be far from a fool, in the modern sense.

<snip>

King James also employed a jester called Archibald Armstrong. During his lifetime Armstrong was given great honours at court. He was eventually thrown out of the King's employment when he over-reached himself and insulted too many influential people. Even after his disgrace, books telling of his jests were sold in London streets. He held some influence at court still in the reign of Charles I and estates of land in Ireland. Charles later employed a jester called Jeffrey Hudson who was very popular and loyal. Jeffrey Hudson had the title of Royal Dwarf because he was short of stature. One of his jests was to be presented hidden in a giant pie from which he would leap out. Hudson fought on the Royalist side in the English Civil War. A third jester associated with Charles I was called Muckle John.

McCaughey resigns as director of medical company

Betsy McCaughey, the healthcare reform opponent who helped tank the Clinton administration's plans and has been spreading misinformation about the current proposals, has resigned from the board of directors of a medical equipment company.

A release put out Friday afternoon by Cantel Medical says that the company received McCaughey's letter of resignation on Thursday. The letter, Cantel Medical says, "stated that she was resigning to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest during the national debate over healthcare reform." McCaughey reportedly received about $30,000 a year in fees from the company.

McCaughey received some negative attention Friday after her appearance on "The Daily Show," which featured host Jon Stewart going hard after her and her claims about healthcare reform.

My interpretation of that is "She did her part, now we have to pretend it wasn't for the money"

She was getting 30k a year for how many years? She has received the money, and likely will again after whatever health bill there is is passed or not. She already got the big lie into the public forum, so why keep her around and take heat?

And in another 4-40 years, when the Corps need a liar to make another big lie, would you want to be the one betting that she will not have resumed her place on their payroll in the interim?

89. "patients are undertreated 46% of the time." Not my direct experience, & she doesn't quote her
source.

My own family: father was given multiple operations at Johns Hopkins that were unnecessary b/c he was sick, dying and 82 y.o. He begged to die, he was given competency tests that he passed with flying colors, but the drs. kept deferring to my stepmother, even when my father could talk and say he wanted no more extraordinary measures. They kept treating him, the bills came to hundreds of thousands of dollars over a one-month period. Finally the drs. said, a few wks after my father said to leave him alone and let him go, they couldn't do anything more.

So he died anyway, despite the many operations, breathing tube, feeding tube, etc, and begging to die in dignity weeks before.

My grandmother broke her hip at age 92 and said, gather the family around, I'm slipping away and want to say goodbye. My father and uncle insisted she get the hip fixed and it would be no problem (so the drs. say). After the operation, she ended up a vegetable who could not speak and had to be fed, diapered, etc. She lived two yrs. like that and the drs. and nursing home got her inheritance (about $1 million), and not the family.

Do NOT trust the drs. and others in your family to make decisions for you. Make your own decisions while you still can and get a document signed by your lawyer and witnesses.

Oh, and throw in Terri Jeffries, just to watch him get his ass kicked.

Now THAT would be an awesome panel.

because sometimes all it takes is exposure to reality and they melt away. Without Rove trying to fake out the media all is lost with these people.

45. I never saw her before the Daily Show, and she really made herself..........
..........look like the dumb bitch she is.

Disclaimer: I don't want to hear any crap about the "term" bitch used here. I believe it applies in her case and in certain other cases for instance Ann Coulter.

I would have no problem in the world as someone describing for instance Tom DeLay as a jag off or other (I think appropriate) name.

53. Is that just coincidence, or have the people in the health care
industry seen the writing on the wall and decided there's no sense paying for these flacks and/or it's time to disassociate themselves from them? If a third one goes down, I'd be willing to call it a trend.

88. I wish. I think these people like to operate in the shadows or in media where they go unquestioned.
When a spotlight is shone on them, they don't like it very much. I think it was the financial situations of their respective companies, is what made them get the sack. Been associated with those two cannot be good for business, especially when the repubs are out of power.

Like a basic cable friendly Bill Maher. I wonder why they haven't done each others show, they are the two most respectable news men there are. The only ones who ask real questions and tell the truth.

64. Hey Cuddy, a fictional character
probably could have read that document with more clarity than McCaughey as far as I can tell. Her strident argument with Jon last night only made her look like she'd been rehearsing the argument for a week or more.

What can I say? Anyone who would be following her lead and repeating her points seriously needs to be put in a straitjacket and put in a mental ward--isn't that right, Mrs. Palin?

80. She was pathetically hysterical on "The Daily Show" the other night...
....actually, she was simply pathetic, Jon Stuart was hysterical and right on the mark. It's amazing that she has advanced degrees - he was bebopping and scatting all over her and she didn't even realize it! She just kept saying he was cute.

The funniest part was when he asked her where something she was talking about was contained in the health care bill (she had a binder with most of it in it), and she said "it's right here on page 4??" (I forget the actual page) then couldn't find the page!!!! Great television!

Sorry she resigned, she may not be as entertaining any more.

83. when faced w/ use of a ventilator, patients "choose to live." BS!!! My father begged to die
Edited on Sun Aug-23-09 10:17 AM by wordpix
with all the extraordinary measures they experimented on him---breathing tube, feeding tube, operations, high doses of antibiotics. He got to the point where he was begging to sign the paper that would give him the right to die----and he was completely mentally competent at the time, although very sick in the ICU. My stepmother refused to let him sign and kept trying to keep him alive with these extraordinary measures, although he was suffering terribly.

Betsy McCagey is full of BS---not all patients want to live when they are suffering near end-of-life. :puke:
