Gov. David Paterson blames calls for him to step aside on race
Source: NY Daily News

ALBANY - Gov. Paterson blamed a racist media Friday for trying to push him out of next year's election - launching into an angry rant that left even some black Democrats shaking their heads.

"The whole idea is to get me not to run in the primary," Paterson complained on a morning radio show hosted by Daily News columnist Errol Louis.

He suggested that Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, the country's only other African-American governor, also is under fire because of his race.

"We're not in the post-racial period," Paterson said.

3. It is, I'm afraid.
I'll preface this by saying I really like Governor Paterson's style and attitude most of the time, but he's a dead man walking. There's been a lack of cohesive leadership coming out of the Governor's office, starting with preference for heavy service cuts instead of a surtax on millionaires. People want him out of the race because he couldn't even win renomination, let alone get reelected.

19. I agree.........I was completely disappointed, no shocked
at how he snubbed Caroline Kennedy during the Senate Seat appointment. He just does not have his pulse on the public needs.

7. The 1st sentence is the headline of the newspaper article not the OP's words.

12. Even if that's true, it's to our benefit
Unless you seriously wish to argue we should be unaware of, and therefore unprepared to respond to, what's being said by MSM and nonprogressives.

What exactly is it that's so progressive about visiting amen threads all day, putting the fortieth "+1" on a post, and spraying epithets on anyone who dares stray from the approved opinion? That's groupthink, by definition.

Meanwhile, pissing on the messengers only makes the pissers look small and unable to formulate arguments.

21. What's wrong with posting articles like this?
Are we supposed to bury our heads in the sand and only talk about positive things? Personally, I am interested in hearing everything, positive and negative.

8. While
I am sure race could be a possible factor, I think it really has to do with him being a virtual unknown thrust upon the position by a sex scandal and then the numerous crap that has occurred while he has been in office including the whole Albany Coup thing (not that he is necessarily to blame for all these things). I think a great deal also has to do with his handling of the state's tanking budget and a lack of transparency about the whole thing, all while giving raises to his staff, plus the whole selection of a senator to replace Clinton fiasco where he may have been behind the mudslinging that kept Caroline Kennedy out of the running. So I think the economic and political shit storm has been the bigger factor, not race as he would like us to believe.

There was a recent poll done where...
http://blog.timesunion.com/capitol/archives/13698/voters-would-prefer-mario-cuomo-pataki-even-spitzer-over-paterson/

...NY Voters said they would prefer former Govs Mario Cuomo (D), Pataki(R), even Spitzer (D) over Paterson. Well, talk about a tough crowd.

14. incompetent, not race
Patterson is spectacularly incompetent.

There's no "may" about his being behind the mudslinging directed at Caroline Kennedy:
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2009/01/26/2009-01-26_hired_pr_gun_doomed_caroline_insiders_sa.html

He lost NY a high profile Senator who was in favor with the White House. And can you imagine Caroline in the midst of the healthcare debate in the Senate? She'd speak for Teddy, get the public's attention, and shame at least some of the cretins into supporting it.

And who can forget that pathetic mutual adultery press conference spectacle Patterson and his wife put on.

His handling of the Caroline Kennedy for Senator issue was oafish, IMO.

18. Patrick's problems have nothing to do with race, either. Unlike Patterson, Patrick was actually
elected. And just about the only time in living memory that Massachusetts elected a Republican Senator, it was Brooke. (He has since woken up to realize the Republicans are not still the party of Lincoln, which is what he claims he thought back then.) I think in both cases, those were the first African Americans elected to those posts since Reconstruction. And Massachusetts vote for Obama in the general was huge.

There are racists in Massachusetts, no doubt. But that's not why Massachusetts has been turning against Patrick. I don't think Patrick claims that, either, but I'm not sure.

Get real, Patterson. Ya messed up. Admit it.

22. I have no problem with his losing to a stronger candidate in the Dem primary.
What I don't want to see is a situation where Patterson ekes out a narrow win against multiple opponents in the primary only to lose to the GOP in the fall. I don't think that's likely though. He will probably lose the primary by a big margin if he doesn't see the handwriting on the wall and drop out before then.

OK, I am surprised at how good of a Senator we got. But I still have a problem with how the Governor treated Caroline so rudely.
