Obama May Give Up Effort to Reach Health Deal With Republicans
Source: Bloomberg

President Barack Obama is likely next month to end Democratic efforts to work with Republicans on health-care legislation and push for a party-line vote if the stalemate in the U.S. Senate persists, a person close to the White House said.

The president and his advisers have begun devising a legislative strategy to pass a measure by relying only on the Democratic majority in each house of Congress, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

In a separate interview, former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle said Obama is losing patience with negotiations between three Democrats and three Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee, the only congressional panel seeking a bipartisan consensus on a plan to remake the nation’s health-care system.

“He’s waited and waited,” Daschle said today after meeting with the president. “He has indicated, much to the chagrin of people in his party, that virtually everything’s on the table,” Daschle said. “And he’s gotten almost nothing in return for it...”

1. Rachel did an excellent piece on the bipartisanship effort tonight. You can
always see it on the MSNBC website if it doesn't show up on YouTube (which it usually does). Well worth watching!

putting so many of the Republican amendments into the bill might have to substitute for the more tradition idea of a bi-partisan bill because the Republicans were not negotiating in good faith. He's starting to seem like the boy who cried "Wolf."

He could have been making his case and heading off a lobbyists attack we knew was coming.. Hope it's not too late to get real and take back control of the agenda the Repukes have so pre-empted.

7. I know this was a pain
But keep in mind, Obama won because he got a lot of people that normally do not vote Democratic. Regretfully, he is their president too, and he had to give the GOP rope to at least tie themselves up with. Yes, it is degrading, but these people are morons. Now, I would like to see a bit less nice nice, and possibly the firing of Rahm, after all, Rahm was hired to A) knock the Blue Dogs into line and B) knock the Israelis into line. Perhaps the aforementioned sheep need to see what it is like to have a REAL enemy in charge....like maybe even St. Dennis Kucinich?

9. If he has gotten nothing in return for everything being on the table......
Then logic would dictate that he has nothing to lose by taking it all back off the table, right?

Mr. President, I know you're not from Texas, but since your IQ's probably double mine, you'll
get this even so:

If the guys in the black hats are gonna shoot you in the foot whether you give them your
gold or not, you might as well hold onto your gold, and see if you can't shoot them in
the foot, too, while you still can.

16. Sounds to me like he knew it was going to go this way
First try to talk to them then pass it with the people who want it. It seems to be how he does most things. I do not feel up-tight about it so far. I do not feel up -tight about most of what he is doing even if some times I could take a faster pace. Then look at what happens with Bush and his rush to war etc.

17. Good Perspective

I agree 100%. More people here should read "The Audacity of Hope," which is in essence his presidential campaign manifesto. He makes his general strategy of trying to reach across divisions first, then going it alone if needed, pretty clear in there. It's a very readable book, too.

But that is how I see it moving along. If they will not come around after some good talks, do it any how and show every one just where the GOP is on ave. people.

Temperament is good in a president. But at some point political War (bloodless) is best for the citizenry. Obama had better realize no traction with republicans. they need a spanking and taught it is better to work together. instead of their bait and switch tactics to humiliate our President.

25. Obama needs to use his majority or lose it. If he's that afraid of that easy down hill slide.
Then we'll have to fill the House and Senate with Republicans. He can have an up hill battle on everything. Including whether or not he'll still be President when he wakes up tomorrow. The Republicans will impeach first and ask questions later. Then he'll understand exactly why you do not play nice with the Republicans. That's like taking kids to a beach and sending them into the water to play nice with the great white sharks. Sure it sounds like a great Utopian idea at first.......

Sometimes when a dog licks a cat. It doesn't mean they're friends. It just means the dog wants to taste it's dinner first. Obama needs to realize he's a cat wearing milk bone underwear.

29. Finally!
The same unthinking Republican clods who have voted in lockstep against everything the Dems have put forward will do so again and again. And they will do so until the GOP is so threatened with being irrelevent that their party undergoes a significant change in leadership and philosophy.

It's high time for Obama to rally the troops, put those "Blue Dog" mutts on a leash and put to a vote a bill that includes a public option.

nuclear option for this one vote only. Trust me, they will do it, no matter what, as soon as they have the majority again. They get more high-handed every week.

35. It's interesting that people still don't get why he was trying "bipartisanship"
The President realizes the GOP hates him.

Not only do they want to bring ruin to his presidency, more than a few would like him dead. Literally dead.

Don't think he isn't aware of that.

But he also knows the GOP gets assists from the MSM whenever they go on some anti-Dem tirade or when they have a meme to spread.

If he didn't make a major effort to reach out to them, they'd be on every news outlet crying that this whole Healthcare effort is some partisan-driven attack on the American way of life or somesuch bullshit, and they'd get pleny of airtime to repeat it ad nauseum.

If they try doing that now, he'll have plenty of proof to shove back in their faces.
