Rioting inmates set central Ky. prison ablaze

By JEFFREY McMURRAY, Associated Press Writer – 29 mins ago

BURGIN, Ky. – Rioting inmates set fire to trash cans and other items inside a central Ky. prison, and damage to some buildings was so extensive that officials were busing many of the facility's 1,200 prisoners elsewhere, police said Saturday.

By early morning, firefighters had extinguished the fires at the medium-security Northpoint Training Center in a rural area 30 miles south of Lexington, state police Lt. David Jude said.

Eight inmates were treated for minor injuries, and eight staff were also injured in the melee, although none was admitted to the hospital, said Cheryl Million, a spokeswoman for the Kentucky Department of Corrections.

Officers in riot gear rushed the prisoners with tear gas about 9 p.m. Friday, and all the inmates were subdued in less than two hours, authorities said.

Six buildings had burned, including a kitchen, medical center, canteen and visitation area. Million also said all dormitories were damaged "to the extent of being inhabitable," except for one 196-bed unit.

1. I'll get the marshmallows!
Bad joke.

I know what can be done, let's rehabilitate them! Starting with the worst offending murderers!

:sarcasm:

Make them rebuild what they've burned down.

Instead of the welfare jobs they hold now.

You break it, you buy it. Kind of like how you have to wash dishes if you can't pay for the meal.

6. Personally, I'd rather know the conditions that led to
a rare and desparate act.

Can't imagine being in a Kentucky prison is much better than being in a 3rd world one, albeit with more crowding...

26. Thank You So Much...
I live in Lexington, KY and I resent your comment...I really wasn't aware that Bellingham, WA was such a sophisticated, urbane center that you would recognize all of us that live in Kentucky as the Hillbilly's we must be. But it gets better for you, I grew in South Carolina...so that makes me a Southern Hillbilly. You must love that.

Listen, prison are bad everywhere and before you pass judgment on any community, perhaps you should become more informed. I have added a link from the Lexington Herald-Leader (yes, we do have newspapers and some of us can read) for you to read. Why we have SWAT police and firefighters and everything. Gee, who would have thought.

Don't mean to be flaming you or anyone else but I am so sick of people from other parts of the US trashing places they have never been or know anything about and I am not just talking about the south. People use the stereotypes that are perpetuated and never make an effort to see past them; I don't know if makes people feel superior or special or what. For goodness sake's, we are all suppose to be Democrats who strive to be inclusive of everyone, caring about our fellow citizens, believe EVERYONE should have heath care, but a riot in a KY prison makes KY a third world nation. Some people need to do a reality check...you not getting this.

7. I think 'rioters' are assholes in general, but in this case they are just idiots.
"I'm unhappy so I'll teach you a 'lesson' by destroying where I live," makes absolutely no sense to me.
I'm aware of how deplorable prison conditions are in the US. But this doesn't improve ANYTHING. In fact, I'm reasonably certain it will only make things worse.

and we also have more than 400,000 inmates every year being released into

society after having spent time in these hell holes!

French Guiana before on herpetology expeditions. I would not want to setup camp in the jungle. Your definition of hell hole seems quite flexible.

17. prison
Anyone posting here from the comfort of their home, that has not walked in the shoes of inmates, should STF UP. Do you seriously believe that the US, which has the highest prison population in the world, only has guilty people(they are people) in prison? Use your brain for something besides a hat rack.

20. You are going to be seeing more and more of this until the conditions..........
..........really, really, and I mean REALLY improve. This is just another of the 562,345 reasons that the US of A is numero uno in prisons, but falling fast in EVERYTHING else. "Move the the USA, quickly becoming an industrial third world shithole"!!!

29. Prison Industrial Complex = FAIL
The key sign that American culture is vapid and dysfunctional is the current state of our prisons. A catastrophe that will be remarked upon at great length by historians. Only Jim Webb seems to get it.
