Gov. Bobby Jindal, after high-profile criticism, says no to federal money for high-speed rail system
Source: Times Picayune, New Orleans

Two days after a national commentator mocked Gov. Bobby Jindal for considering tapping federal stimulus money to build a light rail system between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, the governor's transportation secretary wrote to President Barack Obama's administration saying the idea is scrapped.

"Please be advised that the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will not be applying for the High Speed AARA funds," state transportation chief William Ankner wrote to his federal counterpart, Secretary Ray LaHood. Ankner was referring to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Ankner, a Jindal appointee, told LaHood that Louisiana could not operate the system without an annual operating loss of $18 million per year.

4. jindal, the next reagan that's all you need to know about the prick
And if as christians say life begins at conception and jindal was conceived outside of the USA was he "born" in America? I don't pick and choose in the bible so grant me the question. Or is this another example of conservatives having it their own way sans rational discourse?

I HATE to be in the position of defending Jindal, but I am obsessive about certain things, so I almost have no choice.

Where Jindal was conceived or born is not relebant to anything. The Constitution of the U.S. does not require that Governors or other elected officials to be born in America, only Presidents.

That's why Ahnuld ran for Governor of Calleyforhnya instead of running for President.

The devil (or something close) made me post this and I apologize.

6. Since most of the "roads" in La are what I consider virtually
impassible... I call foul.

When you cross the state line into Texas or Mississippi your teeth once again find a stable place in your mouth to sit.

20. i found it just the opposite
great interstate between new orleans and baton rouge, took 1-20 west which was fine until we got into Texas where the road was diabolical. that was 5 years ago, maybe things hasve changed since.

24. Huh?
I have lived in the metro New Orleans area since 1979, my job requires me to drive 500 to 700 miles a week between Alexandria and Slidell and the only roads I find impassible are the local roads in the Gentilly area of New Orleans. Even the road in the Ninth Ward have been adequately repaired.

32. Don't need to watch teevee
My ancestors on my mother's side have been in New Orleans for 300 years and we have documented that my ancestor was on of the original Ursaline cassette girls. My grandfather used to own a car dealership downtown which moved to Metairie after the storm.

16. Houston to New Orleans would be an awful place to build a high-speed railroad
Too many bayous, swamps, bays, and rivers to cross.

A high-speed rail triangle between Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas is much more useful, since it connects three large cities and is much more economical to build.

17. Tellingly, it was Keith the Olbermann and Jon the Stewart outting him...
MSNBC host Keith Olbermann featured Jindal this week during his "Worst Persons in the World" segment after published reports detailing that Ankner's agency was investigating the possibility of applying for the rail grants.
.
.
.
Jindal was the subject of skewering earlier this month by Comedy Central's Jon Stewart, who took aim at the governor for giving local officials giant checks signed by Jindal but representing federal grant money that the governor does not control.

Bobby, son, you really oughta consider getting your shit together.

On second thought, no. Just stay like you are. Have you considered teaming up with Palin or Bachmann? It'd be comedy gold, I tell ya...

18. Jindal could have let amtrak operate it.
MARC is owned by MTA Maryland but Amtrak practically operates it.

But I bet Jindal will want to build more roads instead.

30. Keith Olbermann is the one who did it!
I knew it when I read the words "national commentator", but they mentioned KO by name a few times later in the full article.

Gee, I thought MSNBC (and particularly, KO) had no viewers and no influence, according to Billo, Rush, and all the other RW hate-talkers. :sarcasm:
