Rich NYC mayor: Drug CEOs don't make much money
Source: AP

NEW YORK (AP) - Billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended multibillion-dollar pharmaceutical companies and their chief executives on Friday, declaring that they "don't make a lot of money" and shouldn't be scapegoats in the health care debate.

The mayor - and wealthiest person in New York City with a fortune estimated at $16.5 billion - made the comments on his radio show Friday during a discussion about health care.

"You know, last time I checked, pharmaceutical companies don't make a lot of money, their executives don't make a lot of money - not that they couldn't be better," Bloomberg said.

Pharmaceutical CEOs are known to make millions, with generous salaries, stock options and other perks. Abbott Laboratories Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Miles White's compensation was $25.3 million in 2008. Merck&Co.'s chief executive, Richard T. Clark, received a $17.3 million compensation package for 2008.

The mayor, a Republican-turned-independent who already has spent more than $36 million on his re-election campaign this year, often battles criticism that he is out of touch with regular people.

4. Bloomberg is a horse's ass

but money can't fix who you are, it can only make your microphone louder. Nice to see the mayor of New York demonstrate what Republicans-turned-Independents are like.

5. Don't take the "independent" stuff seriously.
It's PR. He pays big bucks for it but we are under no obligation (that I know of) to propagate that myth here.

He's seeking the republican nomination for NYC mayoralty to try to defeat the candidate that we nominate. Period.

He's, in essence, a Herbert Hoover republican .... as his analysis of the health care crisis makes clear.

6. I cannot wrap my brain around these numbers,,,,
Taking these dollar amounts, dividing by 52 weeks, then dividing by 40 hours per week ~

Richard T. Clark makes $8,317.31 an hour.

Miles White makes $12,163.46 an hour.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are no words :shrug:
7. You think that's bad...
...take what Bloomberg's spent so far this year on re-election.
If he spends NO MORE this year, he will spend almost $4,000 per hour, 24 hour hours a day, 365 days a year, in that effort.
16. His personal fortune maybe that low, but his biz fortune is MUCH higher
Dem who slithered into GOP who then slithered into "Independent" who then mandated a third term...I still have fantasies about him being hospitalized with festering boils on his butt.
He's a greedy bass turd who's sold out the middle class in NY, crippled the first responders and snuggled with the big developers for years. He will always defend the rich, old, white misers. I hope to live long enough to see him brought way way down in a scandal of the same magnitude as the devastation he's wrought.
17. same a*e who sneaked through the closure of Manhattan's largest homeless shelter;
and told the destitute to go suck it up in the outer boroughs.
sadly, since the dems can't come up with a decent alternative, from outside their corrupt political machine, this rich elitist scum will probably end up running this city for another 4 years & moving it closer to all the rich old guys' wet dream of a capitalist shangri-la.
only thing one can say on bloomberg's behalf is: he's not as much of a stupid fascist as giuliani.
