Congressman Herger calls Obama plan 'threat to democracy'

Redding, Calif. -

Republican Congressman Wally Herger held a health care town hall meeting Aug. 18 at Simpson University in Redding, where a partisan crowd of over 2,000 people loudly cheered Herger’s position that a public option was “unacceptable.”

Although Herger called several times for the audience to “respect each other’s opinions,” those opposed to president Obama’s health care were greeted with cheers while the few in favor were interrupted with catcalls.

Herger did not hold back on his opinion of the health care plan and the administration’s appointment of “czars” to head various departments and task forces.

“Our democracy has never been threatened as much as it is today,” Herger said to a loud standing ovation.

Although there were not the kind of disruptions that have been reported at Democratic representative’s town hall meetings, an altercation in the back of the auditorium resulted in Redding police having to intervene and hustle two people out of the room. Police reported that a woman is alleged to have clawed a man’s face in repose to his having pushed her while arguing over the health care plan. The investigation continues.

7. Obama's plan is a result of democracy. The birther/turfer movement is the threat to democracy.
The talk of revolution to overthrow a democracy coming from Murka's right wing is what is anti-democracy.

Revolutions to overthrow democracy aren't planning to install a democracy after said revolution.

They'd install a dictator.

Congressman Herger-If democracy's results are that painful then leave America. Why live in a democracy if you can't handle its outcome?

12. This jerk is my congressman and I hate him
I call his office up screaming regularly. The staff knows me. It makes no difference. For some reason the democratic party thinks they do not have a chance so he just gets little competition each election. We need a better strategy in California.

He is a mormon with ~9 children, none of whom joined up for the wars he voted for. He voted with W something like 98% of the time.

16. Anyone want to take some responsibility for Democrats being part of the problem?

"Although Herger called several times for the audience to “respect each other’s opinions,” those opposed to president Obama’s health care were greeted with cheers while the few in favor were interrupted with catcalls."

We know what's happening at these town meetings. Why are we not showing up in droves and filling those seats at each and every one of them? The AFL-CIO did it at some of the meetings, but where are individual Democrats, taking some initiative and showing up at the meetings of both the Democratic Reps and the Republican Reps?

And the fault is not only at the individual level.

I actually wanted to go to my Democratic Rep's town meeting. Looked at his website and saw no mention of them. Nor did he email me. Sure, I could have called his office. I meant to, but it kept slipping my mind during his hours. So, shame on me, too, but my life's work is not politics. His is. So is the DNC's.

The Republicans have a structure that enables them to call out their folks whenever they want. They also have access to the NRA and a lot of the churches, who can also beat he drums for them. Knowing that, where are individual Democrats, especially the more affluent ones (yes, there are plenty) and the Democratic Party to set up infrastructures for organizing their people for things like this?

Where is the party, to go to the Buffets, Soros, Speilbergs and other deep pockets and suggesing that they band together and buy a radio or a TV station, or set up a counerpart to the Heritage Foundation, etc. Why are we not holding their feet to the fire to be as organized and disciplined as the Republicans? We can get support from unions from time to time, but neither they nor their memberships are in the pockets of the Democrats anymore, as they once were.

So, we have almost no way of calling up the troops. (And no, those emails they send every five minutes asking for money are not the answer. People, including me, finally just unsubscribe to cut down on the clutter of trivia, or just delete them unopened.) And when called up, the Republicans show up. If they are told to bring teabags, they do. If they are told to strap on their weapons in plain sight, they do. Are we as motivated?

I know it's a lot easier and more fun to blame it all on the Republicans, but that is not going to get done the jobs we need to get done. Fun, but not effective. We have to own up to our own acts and omissions and those of our Party and do some thinking if we atually want to change anything.
