McCain: Obama must drop health care public option
Source: AP

WASHINGTON – Sen. John McCain says President Barack Obama will have to drop proposals for a government-run health insurance option if he hopes to reach congressional agreement on health-care reform.

McCain says many Americans are losing confidence in Obama partly because of concerns about the so-called public option. The Arizona Republican proposed that Obama meet with members of both parties in Congress to find areas of agreement, abandon the public option, and then make clear exactly what he wants in the legislation.

McCain said that right now Obama is simply leaving it to Congress to decide the details and that isn't enough. He maintains that Republicans are willing to sit down with the president and talk about various reforms.

"He maintains that Republicans are willing to sit down with the president and talk about various reforms."

Highly doubtful. They want the Dems to fail at this, period.

70. Yes, like a $3,000 credit to buy private insurance that McHenry was bragging about this am.
Most people who don't have insurance couldn't afford to spend $3,000 to buy insurance in the 1st place never mind that the average health insurance plan costs $12,000. So the person would have to fork out $12,000 for the premium and then about $3,000 in out-of-pocket expenses and co-payments if he actually got sick.

So a single person making $25,000 is going to shell out $15,000 dollars for health care just to get $3,000 tax credit on $19,550 of income after standard deductions? That income requires them to pay $2,304 in taxes which will have been withheld from their paycheck. So with the credit, they will get a full refund of the money taken out of the check. So instead of getting $3,000 to pay for their health insurance, they will get $2,304. So this single person will have to pay $12,696 for their health care.

The remaining $12,304 of their check will go for state taxes, federal Social Security and FICA taxes, room and board, transportation, food and other necessities.

Wow John, what a deal! These guys are truly a joke.

44. McCain lost all credibility long before he picked Palin.
He was so out of credibility that Palin gave him a bounce. However, he continues to lose credibility as he continues to defend choosing her, even after she didn't save his sorry ass in the election. And as he defends her death panel statement, and tries to make it seem rational, as he did with George Steph this morning.

Honestly, the more I think about Republicans, the madder I get.

50. STFU McLame......
First of all the Repukes are not going to agree to anything, at least not on any broad basis. We might peel off a few moderate Republican like Collins and Snowe but there will not be any broad based support. I would guess that even if the Democrats gave trillions more away to the health care lobby in the form of direct cash payments the Republicans would be against it. They don't care about what is actually in the bill(s), they just want to be able to tell their ever-shrinking base that they were against it, whatever it was.

Second, I thought we had three key objectives with health care reform that even the blue dog (I prefer to call them "mongrels") Democrats originally agreed with:
(1) Increase the number of insured Americans (there have always been differences of whether this was to insure everyone or simply make a sizeable dent in the number of uninsured)
(2) Reform Health Care Insurance so that it is fair by eliminating lifetime caps, pre-existing condition rules, discontinuance of coverage due to age or illness and significant increases in premiums due to age or illness
(3) Reduce the cost of health care

Well it is difficult to achieve #3 if you don't deal with #1 in a more than substantial manner. All Americans need to be covered by health insurance so that the cost of delivering the services to the uninsured are not built back into the prices that providers charge health insurance companies. If everyone is covered you effectively spread risk across the entire populace and not just those that currently have health insurance.

I predict that without a public option to keep the insurance companies in check, all they will do is take the additional costs associated with #2 and roll them into new ever higher premiums for the insured. They will not take a haircut in terms of bonuses, lavish perks, etc. and they certainly won't ask investors to take a lower return on their investment.

A public option is needed to introduce competition into the marketplace. Without it we may see some marginal benefits in terms of lifetime caps, pre-existing conditions, etc. but it will come at a price paid for by employers and the insured.

These GOPers know how to dissemble. The quickest way to kill an Obama presidency is for him to drop the public option. He will kill a massive element of his support, the ones who worked hardest for his initial election. I'll be gone.

They couldn't convince Jeb Bush to run and they were stuck with John-boy, whom the RNC consider a RINO. So they "vetted" an empty head VP hoping that if they did win the election, McCain would die mid-term and then empty head would be President and it would be just like Bush II. This carpet-bagging piece of crap just keeps cluelessly slaving with the party that doesn't give a shit about him anymore.

67. How about McCain gives up his health care...
as a way of showing his solidarity with those poor little private health insurers? It would be like a hunger strike except McCain could actually put his health on the line for the sake of profit-making companies.

68. sell one of your damn houses
and hundreds could be insured! Sorry, I know that's simplistic and unhelpful but he is so infuriating and misguided. He and Lieberman really are heartless. Keep everyone in a state of submissiveness and desperation and we'll take whatever the corporate masters decide to "trickle down" to us. I can't stand their hypocrisy and ethical illness anymore.
All I can do is let Obama and my reps know how I feel.

79. I don't think that John Kerry was ever heard from again, and if so......
it would have been in 2007, for like a hot minute while the media savaged that "joke" that John Kerry supposedly told. Remember, the one that ended his presidential aspirations for 2008?
