Justice Dept. Report Advises Pursuing C.I.A. Abuse Cases
Edited on Sun Aug-23-09 11:24 PM by Bolo Boffin
Source: New York Times

The Justice Department’s ethics office has recommended reversing the Bush administration and reopening nearly a dozen prisoner-abuse cases, potentially exposing Central Intelligence Agency employees and contractors to prosecution for brutal treatment of terrorism suspects, according to a person officially briefed on the matter.

The recommendation by the Office of Professional Responsibility, presented to Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. in recent weeks, comes as the Justice Department is about to disclose on Monday voluminous details on prisoner abuse that were gathered in 2004 by the C.I.A.’s inspector general but have never been released.

4. I'm thinking they want to use this story to get the heat off of health care
this week.

But, I've been too cynical to live for a long time. :(

6. Its futile if that's the motive.
Too many people my age care more about health insurance right now.

The few who still care about the WAR, (like me) have children in this clusterfuck. My youngest son came back from there last month.

8. I'm glad he's back, saigon68.
I don't really know if taking a week off from the media heat is a good idea or not. Maybe it will free up time for the White House or give them more room to negotiate without the spotlight. I don't know.

Like the OP, I'm glad of any attention this story gets because once our government feels free to torture with impunity, none of us are safe. And I won't feel like any of us are safe until this is dealt with. I have sons and nieces and nephews and this isn't the country I want to leave them. :(

Corruption, dirt, cruelty and a culture whose twin apparently lived in the 12th Century.

A place where there is only hate, inequality and rule by men with guns.

I asked him and this is what he came up with.

11. If the Republicans want to terrorize America with visions of death panels.
Why not show America the other death panels they created?

I don't care why it's being done. It just needs to be done.

So don't hold your breath for any war crimes prosecutions - Holder's not likely to prosecute himself, nor Clinton.

12. Calls to reopen CIA abuse cases
Edited on Mon Aug-24-09 10:21 AM by dipsydoodle
Source: BBC News

The US justice department is calling for about a dozen prisoner abuse cases to be reopened, US media say.

The recommendation could lead to the prosecution of CIA employees and contractors over the treatment of terrorism suspects, the reports say.

The call comes as justice officials are set to disclose previously censored parts of a key report on inmate abuse.

>

The call for the reopening of the prisoner abuse cases - mainly in Iraq and Afghanistan - was made by the US Department of Justice's ethics office, the New York Times reported.

Now I hope they expand the investigations once the evidence comes out against Darth, Bush, Rove, etc.
