Springfield (IL) to require training after nooses found
Source: Chicago Trib

PRINGFIELD, Ill. - City officials in Springfield say plans are in the works to require city workers to take diversity and sensitivity training after two nooses were found hanging at city facilities.

The nooses were found earlier this summer hanging at the city's water and electricity department. One of the nooses was found at the work station of a black employee.

Nooses are often considered symbols of racial oppression, invoking images of racist lynchings.

Springfield Mayor Tim Davlin says he didn't think sensitivity training would be necessary in the year 2010, but he's learned more needs to be done.

Authorities are investigating if criminal charges will be filed against the three white employees who allegedly tied and hung the nooses.

1. Sensitivity training?
Would that really make any change in the kind of person who'd hang nooses in their workplace?

5. The city of Springfield has done a great job of remembering
and teaching about the race riot. I visited the exhibit at the Presidential Library a year ago, and took the walking tour this past June. It's so sad that this is happening in Springfield.

12. Commemorating the race riot is likely to irritate racists
who were just as happy with the way it was ignored for nearly a century. Calling out mimetic violence and naming it doesn't just make it go away. It enflames those who support it. It still needs to be confronted. It's not a surprise that racists come out in the light when the community admits to its history of racism.

19. They mention possible criminal charges against three white employees.
Authorities are investigating if criminal charges will be filed against the three white employees who allegedly tied and hung the nooses.

I made an assumption that if they're considering charges they know who did it, even if their names weren't mentioned in the article.

21. "Alleged" is used when there has been no conviction or confession
but it does not mean suspects have not been identified.

But you knew that, didn't you.

Ryan Jenkins was the one who did this.

There. It has been alleged.

24. I was referring to publications.
My AP Stylebook and Libel Manual (please note the second purpose of the book) is a bit dated, since I haven't done newspaper reporting for well over a decade, but http://www.cjr.org/language_corner/jumping_off_allege.php?page=all gives a bit of information on the use and/or misuse of "allege," including references to AP and other professional guidelines.

Even when a person is "known" to have committed a crime, protections against libel suggest that qualifiers such as "alleged," "suspected," or "accused" are wise.

8. In the Land of Lincoln
You can't walk out the door in Springfield without a Lincoln reminder. Not sure sensitivity training will help.

11. There was a major race riot in Springfield in 1908.
In fact, it was the Springfield Race Riot that gave rise to the founding of the NAACP. The Land of Lincoln is not immune to racism.

Sadly.

18. Typical bullshit management response...
They'll force everybody to waste a day sitting through some worthless, demeaning, third-grade level training exercise because they don't have the stones to just fire these assholes and be done with it. If we added up all the time that management forces their employees to waste (most of it to justify management's existence), and then multiplied that by the hourly wages of all the workers whose time was wasted, we'd have enough to pay for health care from that alone.
