Canada, U.S. agree to discuss Buy American waiver

"The proposal that I have sent to Representative Kirk is a two-phased approach," Mr. Day said. "We want something that will deal with the time-limited effect of Buy America and their specific legislation in the Recovery Act. But I am also asking for a second phase, longer-term approach on procurement so that when the wheels of the international economy grind down ... the commitment against protectionism will remain the same."

The Canadian Trade Minister was asked during the teleconference whether any deal with the U.S. federal government would have a major effect given that individual states and municipalities have also instituted protectionist measures within their own jurisdictions.

Mr. Day refused to answer, saying that to do so would require him to get into details that he does not want to discuss before Mr. Kirk and his officials look at what has been put before them.

Mr. Kirk's office did not respond to questions yesterday.

and they have supported us in many of our insane endeavors, I think an exception should be made...
after all what is actually made in America that we need anyway?

We have sent so much out of country, that half of what comes from Canada was American once. (ok I pulled that our of my ass, I imagine more of that actually comes from mexico)

"Buy American" is stupid, IMO.
