Prosecutor: Crime scene at Okla. church 'horrific'

ANADARKO, Okla. – The scene inside a small Pentecostal church where a pastor was slain was "horrific," an Oklahoma district attorney said Tuesday, calling it the most brutal he has seen in nearly 20 years as a prosecutor.

Police have released scant information about the killing of 61-year-old Carol Daniels, whose body was found Sunday inside the Christ Holy Sanctified Church, a weather-beaten building on a rundown block near downtown Anadarko. A preliminary autopsy deemed Daniels' death a homicide caused by "multiple sharp force injuries," said Cherokee Ballard, spokeswoman for the state Medical Examiner's office. She declined to discuss further details.

"I've prosecuted over 50 murders," District Attorney Bret Burns said. "This is the most horrific crime scene I've ever witnessed." He declined to elaborate, saying he did not want to jeopardize the investigation.

Not much difference between love and hate when you get really psychotic.

5. Pentecostalism = worst of the worst fundy bunch
You'd be hard pressed to come up with a religious group that's any further to the right, they are practically an American Taliban organization. Extremely fanatical, relying heavily upon brainwashing.

7. Yeah, women pastors aren't popular with that bunch.
Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 01:33 AM by juno jones
There was a magazine, fundie baptist I think, that found itself basically boycotted several months ago because they ran a 'women in religion' issue that featured women pastors on the cover. Apparently, there was great hoo-hah in the consevative talibornagain circles because women can't represent god according to them.

I've always wondered why any woman with half a brain would attempt to get ahead in that culture. They should know the deck is stacked, but then I don't get some other members of marginalized groups kissing up to those guys either. How much do you have to hate yourself to try to gain power within a group that despises 'your kind'?

I hope that poor woman has found some sort of peace.

8. Pentecostals have been ordaining women since their earliest days in this country.
The two largest Pentecostal bodies, The Assemblies of God and The United Pentecostal Church both ordain women. Always have. The founder of The Foursquare Church, Aimee Semple McPherson, was a woman.

Pentecostals are not technically Fundamentalists. Their attitude toward women in ministry is as good as most mainline churches, better than some.

14. They're still pretty damned fundamentalist AFAIC
I grew up in a Pentecostal family. While there might be a few women pastors, their beliefs are still pretty damned fundamentalist. Most believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible, believe the earth is only 6000 years old, that God placed dinosaur fossils in the ground to confuse mankind, that they will be caught up in the Rapture, that the arrival of the Antichrist is imminent, and that they - and they only - will be saved.

They believe in separating themselves from the "ungodly" world, demand strict obedience and adherence to their "holiness standards", many churches will ostracize "backsliders" - even harassing them in some cases.

18. They ain't big on pagans either.
That's one reason I give them a wide berth.

That, and the fact that they take the bible on a literal rather than in the metaphoric and symbolic level just tells me they aren't my cup of tea.

12. You obviously know nothing about the various
pentecostal sects. Assembly of God and Four Square both regard women in their ministry highly. They, in many respects, raise the 'godliness' of women above men, always have. Baptists are not pentecostals. Sorry to disappoint you, I know it is soooo entertaining to bash things you don't understand and fear things which you are ignorant of.

I am not a pentecostal, was years ago, nearly everyone in the church I attended were Democrats.

17. I wasn't really bashing, just stating a view based upon what I had read.
There are myriad christian sects, some better than others about their views on women. Sorry if there was any confusion. Your brand of pentacostalism may be hunky-dory, but I've run into a few who weren't quite so nice.

ANADARKO, Oklahoma -- District Attorney Bret Burns said the murder of 61-year-old Carol Daniels is the most horrifying single murder case he has ever had to investigate.

"Whoever did this is evil and has no soul," Burns said. "The facts in this case, the way this lady died, is just horrific."

The State Medical Examiner's Office concluded the autopsy and released the results Tuesday.

"The cause of death is multiple sharp force injuries and the manner of death is homicide," said the M.E.'s Spokesperson Cherokee Ballard.

Burns said investigators are releasing few details about the murder so as not to jeopardize the case.

"We're not used to seeing this type of crime in Oklahoma. It is a shocking case. It is brutal murder," Burns said.

Daniels was the pastor at Christ Holy Sanctified Church in Anadarko. Police said they have no suspects and few leads.

Members of Daniels' congregation said they were going to attend church Sunday when they noticed the door to the building was locked. That's when they called police who discovered Daniels.

16. Anadarko used to be a sundown town.
This could have been a racially-oriented crime, unfortunately.
