Soviets planned Manchester , UK, invasion
Source: Yahoo News

A map showing the route Soviet tanks would have taken in a planned invasion of Manchester in 1974 have been revealed.

Moscow's generals targeted roads wide enough for the armoured vehicles to roll into the city centre.

The Russians aimed to conquer the city during the Cold War by heading along Washway Road, the Mancunian Way and Princess Road.

The map is on display in an exhibition at the University of Manchester's John Rylands Library as part of the Royal Geographical Society annual conference.

2. Actually...
....it's City fans who live in Manchester. Man U fans are glory hunters who come from elsewhere and only support Man U cos they win all the time.

Typical Man U fan, thinks the whole of football revolves around them and then wonders why everyone else thinks they are a bunch of utter tossers.

6. I am sure we have hundreds such maps too.
Not sure what this says other than that the world is divided into many multicolored maps like this for military nations.

7. Precisely
There are lots of folks whose job it is to produce plans and maps. I would bet that we have invasion plans and maps for the UK as well.

9. Us had plans to invade Canada back in the 1920's
Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 09:14 AM by Kaleva
Just in case war with Great Britain happened.

http://www.worldaffairsboard.com/world-wars/9913-u-s-had-secret-1930-plan-invade-canada.html

"That, in a nutshell, is Plan Red, the U.S.'s no-longer-secret blueprint for the invasion, occupation and annexation of Canada, which was originally drawn up and approved by the U.S. War Department in 1930, then updated in 1934 and 1935.
Interviewed about it by the Washington Post, Mayor Sam Katz said Winnipeg's winter would do to the Americans what Russia's did to Napoleon.

"You'll meet your Waterloo on the banks of the Assiniboine," he quipped.

The 94-page document, called Joint Army and Navy Basic War Plan -- Red, has the word SECRET stamped on the cover.

But before Canadians take to the barricades, it's worth noting the plan was declassified in 1974, SECRET is crossed out with a heavy pencil and the plan is available for anyone to photocopy for 15 cents a page, or about 17 cents Cdn.

War Plan Red sounds like a joke, but was no more of a joke than "Defence Scheme No. 1," Canada's plan to beat the Yankees to the punch. Drafted in 1921, it called for Canadian forces to seize U.S. points at the first threat of an invasion from the south, and then carry out a scorched-earth retreat.

The U.S. actually designed War Plan Red for a war with England.

In the late 1920s, American military strategists developed plans for a war with Japan (code name Orange), Germany (Black), Mexico (Green) and England (Red)."

I didn't know until now that Canada had a plan to invade the US.

17. I doubt we'd have had the same issues as napoleon
he didn't have our industrial base, wealth and logistics on his side. Also, he was kind of a megalomaniac. Not that we don't have those, but they aren't given absolute reign here.

Someone would likely have reminded the general in charge to pack some sweaters for the troops.

Also, most of canadas population lives right on the border, where it is reasonable, not in the great frozen north. We wouldn't need to march millions of troops to the north pole for a successful invasion.

14. They planned to kidnap the best young hockey players
in preparation for an expanded NHL.

Back then, USAers weren't so hot, the Swedes, Finns, Czechs and Slovaks weren't exporting players, and the Soviet Union was in lock down.

So what else do you do when you need more players?

Besides, the beer was better.

**total goof**

15. All these plans were mastabatory exercises for professional military planners
I'm sure even the Soviets in their planning office knew when they were drawing it up that any war with NATO that got to the point of an invasion of the UK would have gone nuclear.

fed up of the storylines on Coronation Street and so they can get the shows earlier.

Granada was based in Manchester.
