Democrat Landrieu does not support public option in health-care proposal

U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., said she does not support a "public option" plan or national health insurance reform and would not vote for a House plan as it now exists.

When lawmakers return to Washington after Labor Day, the House is expected to debate the proposed health-care reform bill, House Resolution 3200, that includes creation of a publicly funded insurance plan that would compete with private insurers.

In a visit to Alexandria on Wednesday, Landrieu held a short news conference in which she predicted the House plan will be rejected in the Senate if it is adopted as currently written.

"No," she said when asked if she would vote for the House plan. "I don't generally support a public-option plan, but we've got to get the costs down."

"I'll do everything within my power to help this child." Well passing the Democrat Plan and supporting public option would be a start.

29. You're dead wrong
Landrieu is a lock for as long as she wants that seat. She has been a great senator for Louisiana's top priorities.

11. Link to Mary's town hall here in LA
http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2009/08/live_from_reserve_sen_mary_lan.html

Among the highlights:

Another woman told Landrieu she is a recent stroke victim having trouble covering her out of pocket costs, even with some insurance. "Sometimes things happen," Landrieu said. "Let's be honest about this. We want to have some option that is affordable so you can do your job as a citizen, so you can provide for yourself."

She should get together and make little evil babies with Tom Coburn.

17. Dianne Feinstein sounds like a "no" vote as well ... link
Edited on Thu Aug-27-09 04:20 PM by Alhena
If Dianne Feinstein and Joe Liebermann are against the public option, it is on life support. This article is from a month ago, but I haven't heard that anything has changed:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/07/24/MN4N18U122.DTL

Feinstein, in an interview Thursday, echoed Blue Dog fears about the potential for health care reform to compound, rather than correct, the unsustainable rise in federal debt.

Future budget deficits are being driven by Medicare and Medicaid entitlements. Legislation under consideration would vastly expand Medicaid rolls and provide more subsidies to lower-income earners to purchase insurance.

"I'm concerned that there not be another entitlement," Feinstein said. "Entitlements are well over 50 percent of every dollar the federal government spends this year and are going straight up. If you add more entitlements, it's a problem."

26. Nah, she is supposed to release a statement tomorrow indicating her support
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/8/27/773285/-US-Sen.-Dianne-Feinstein-to-issue-statement-re:-public-option
Joe at Senator Feinstein's local office answered my call this afternoon and let me know that he would pass along my conditional offer of continued support and activism on behalf of many Democratic Party candidates and issues here in San Francisco.

That condition being the Senator's support for a public option in the health insurance reform legislation, Joe then responded to my followup question - "what is the Senator's position?" - with pleasant news.

Feinstein it was said is supportive of the public option and has plans issue a statement to that effect tomorrow.

18. Vigil at Mary's NOLA Offices Next Wednesday
From Moveon.org and Organizing for America

"Hale Boggs Federal Building--Poydras and Magazine, 500 Poydras Street (Map)
New Orleans, LA 70130
Wednesday, September 2nd, 7:30 PM

Joint effort with OFA (Organizing for America). Outside Mary Landrieu's New Orleans office.
Message from host: Fueling fear among the elderly to keep the insurance gravy train from derailing is criminal callousness. Stoking anti-government sentiment and lying are despicable acts from desperate opponents. Rationing is a lie unless you are talking about what is going on now with corporate bureaucrats cherry-picking and denying. Snuffing out grandma is a lie. Saying we can’t afford it is another lie. The American Plan (Public Option) is right and legislators in DC must prioritize and find a way to pay for it. Each of us are but 1 serious illness or job layoff away from being uninsured. Health care reform without a public option is NO reform at all."

21. I AM SICK AND TIRED OF AMERICANS BEING TREATED LIKE CRAP!!!
I have 100% VA coverage as a Liberal veteran, but I am sick of Democrats & Republicans treating the American people like discarded crap to sweep under the rug!!

America is spending 2.2Trillion Annually on private health care.

Obama wants to spend 1.2Trillion every 10 years on all Americans for health Care.

And then we have representatives on both sides of the isle saying they want to cut costs further on National Health Care??

Excuse me?? Emanuel wants to modify the Hypocritical Oath so doctors can offer less care to Americans.

I have already wrote a protest letter to the WH on this issue. Americans should get the best National Health Care plan in the world, not the cheapest, and not one that is so bad a licensed doctor cannot even take the medical oath if he treats you.

I really have had it with Congress, down both sides of the isle.
