Warner: I'll Vote For Public Option
Source: Blue Virginia

Last night, at John Bell's fundraiser, Senator Warner said to a group of people that, in the end, he would not vote against health care reform containing the public option. I didn't report that immediately for two reasons: 1) I wasn't there when he said it, but heard it secondhand; and 2) I wasn't sure if it was on or off the record. Well now, after just getting off the phone with Senator Warner's office, I can confirm that this is correct information - in the end, the public option is not a "make or break" for Warner one way or the other and he WILL vote for a health care reform bill with a public option in there. Good news.

TPM (http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/08/warner-ill-vote-for-public-option-if-health-care-reform-legislation-contains-costs.php) and OpenLeft (http://openleft.com/diary/14825/senate-whip-count-update) have both confirmed this.

A spokesman for Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) confirms to me that Warner would vote for a health care bill with a public option. "It's not a make or break thing--he wants to see a health reform bill that contains costs, and if it includes a public option...he would vote for it."

27. one more, kinda, as well
Wyden's office says he is open to a public option. But only if it has "price controls" and is open to everyone to join. So.. He will vote for it as long as its a strong public option. But its such a clunky way of saying that, I wish he would have gotten out in front and made a simple commitment.

3. Good -
he's my Senator, and our neighbor, and I've been pestering him with emails.

If I wanted a Republican Senator, I told him, I'd have voted for one.

I still want single payer, but this is good. I'd like Mark Warner to get the hell away from the mendacious and evil Evan Bayh...............

7. Warner has been a HUGE disappointment and he's gotten many a phone call from me telling him so.
How nice of him to actually do what his constituents elected him to do, albeit in a half-hearted and grudging way. I hate that we are stuck with his weaselly @ss for 5+ more years.

9. I'm hoping he's gonna snap out of it -
he did a great job as governor. I have no idea what's happened to him in the Senate, especially with the incomparable Jim Webb as his fellow Senator from the Commonwealth.

He just better wise up..............................

21. Agreed.
I never would have expected it would be the ex-Reagan official who would be the better Democratic senator. Webb has really impressed me. Warner better step it up.

(I actually once told a very helpful and friendly Webb staffer that she needed to go down the hall and give Warner a dope slap. She laughed like it wasn't the first time she'd heard that one!)

I was definitely disappointed when I wrote to him and got the canned "bi-partisan" response and was hoping for a version of single payer. I'm also not happy that he is a part of Bayh's "blue dog" group eiither. However, this is the best that we could hope to get from him for now.

23. I sent my Senator Feinstein yet another email requesting that
the public option be the Ted Kennedy Medicare for All. That's the bailout we the people need in these uncertain times, after watching billions being tossed at bailing out the financial sector and billions more tossed at wars of choice and extending the war on Afghanistan when other approaches would be more effective.

We the people need a significant bailout in these devastating times. Ted Kennedy's Medicare for All as our public option would fit the bill. And would only need 51 votes in reconciliation. Although it would help the Democratic Party's reputation if they would all band together to support the moral imperative of giving us health security in these times of great economic upheaval.

And the private insurance exchange is a bailout for the private sector. Giving them a strong regulatory framework so that they can explain to their shareholders just why their profits will no longer be soaring. It will give them yet another chance to prove to us that they can do things more effectively than the public sector, even though they have failed miserably to prove that to us since they last stomped out Democrats' attempts to introduce national health insurance over ten years ago.

I also let her know I hoped the regulatory framework for the private option would eliminate the age discrimination they practice. Age is a pre-existing condition. I try to stay healthy but can't rewind my official date of birth.

6. I've Been Writing Him
and all I'd get back was talk of co-ops and "triggers".
I was rather blunt with my last message:
"strong public option or you loose my support and my vote"

I'm glad to see he is seeing the light.

They are both indicating they will consider Ted's request for an interim appointment to fill his seat, BUT, they are also talking about holding hearings and maybe not being able to get it done before January (when current law requires them to hold the special election anyway--i.e., eff Ted Kennedy, no interim appointment).

Let them know the whole world is watching and slow walking it will not go unnoticed.
