American commander: US on the road out of Iraq
Source: Associated Press

The U.S. military is packing up to leave Iraq in what has been deemed the largest movement of manpower and equipment in modern military history — shipping out more than 1.5 million pieces of equipment from tanks to antennas along with a force the size of a small city.

The massive operation already under way a year ahead of the Aug. 31, 2010 deadline to remove all U.S. combat troops from Iraq shows the U.S. military has picked up the pace of a planned exit from Iraq that could cost billions.

The goal is to withdraw tens of thousands of troops and about 60 percent of equipment out of Iraq by the end of next March, Brig. Gen. Heidi Brown, a deputy commander charged with overseeing the withdrawal, told The Associated Press in one of the first detailed accounts of how the U.S. military plans to leave Iraq.

Convoys carrying everything from armored trucks to radios have been rolling near daily through southern Iraq to Kuwait and the western desert to Jordan since President Barack Obama announced the deadline to remove combat troops, leaving up to 50,000 troops under a U.S.-Iraqi security agreement until the end of 2011.

14. 50,000 is less than the number he said while campaigning
He and Hillary both were saying 75,000 to 90,000 would stay in Iraq and a strike force would stay in the immediate area in Kuwait or Quatar as a rapid response unit. Anyone should realize we are never leaving Iraq. We just built the largest foreign embassy on earth there and have promised the oil copmpanies we would protect them.. As long as the killing stops I don't really care. There is no difference IMO between having troops stationed in Iraq or Germany as long as there is no killing going on..It is possibly a good thing for us to have an American presence deep within the Mid-East. As long as we bwehave ourselves and act as Americans were once known to act, our military could become great embassadors.

16. yes, like we did in IRAN. geezus, you just justified Bush's illegal invasion
Bush and Cheney thank you for your support.
Now that Obama is in, it doesnt seem to bother a lot of people that we are ILLEGALLY OCCUPYING A FOREIGN COUNTRY

17. I don't think I justified anything, just trying to be as much a realist as possible
If it was up to me we would have never have invaded and occupied Iraq or Afghanistan. It is not up to me. We did do those things and IMO the way it is going to play out is for US troops to stay in both Iraq and Afghanistan for many decades to come.. I can't change that but I can wish that the killing will stop and if that happens, then I won't object too strenuously to our troops being over there, no more than I do with our troops being in Japan or Germany or any other country we currently have a US Military presence in. It is my desire that the Military budget be cut by seventy percent and that money spent on USA, whether Health care for our citizens or road maintenance, or airport repairs or ??????? the list is endless. Cancer research is at the top as well. We lose far more people to cancer than from War or foreign enemies.. Let's address the real issues and stop the Profiteering.

19. Winterblues - you mentioned, quite correctly that the USA loses more people to cancer than wars . .
.
.
.

you sorta forgot sumthing

WHAT ABOUT THE MILLIONS THE USA IS SLAUGHTERING WORLDWIDE!!??

USA has people like you and me sitting in front of their computers directing bombs at people 5,000 miles away.

"Shock and Awe" was a bombardment of Iraq from the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf where thousands of Iraqis were killed by bombs the USA launched safely from hundreds of miles away.

BUT

Very few USA citizens were killed

so it's all OK . . .

sick nation you got there

brave?

I think not . . .

21. I did not forget about the millions of people killed by warfare
There are also millions killed by cancer throughout the world. I am talking about American lives though and more Americans die every three days from tobacco exposure than died on 9-11. I want the killing to end, whether it be from tobacco or cancer or most especially from US War. We should be a more enlightened nation than we are..

24. "Realist"?
Proclaiming to be a realist IS asserting justification for one's point of view. The fact that someone uses the term "realist" instead of citing legitimate justifications shows they understand there is no justification.

Mincing words to support the non supportable is something freepers prescribe to. I am just saying....

10. At least a little progress has come.
I can't believe I live in a country that invades other countries and lies about the whole thing from start to finish. Obama should denounce this war in no uncertain terms and make Bush look like the POS idiot he was in going there, end the wars and other nasty imperialism, and of course bring him to justice. At least a little progress has come.

20. Given that the number of contractors
now exceeds the number of US troops, the USA having now effectively privatised it's military , are they going too ?
