Colo. Man Plans To Execute Horses In Protest
Source: CBS

FORT LUPTON, Colo. (CBS) ―

Weld County deputies are working on a plan to protect two dozen horses after a man threatened to have them killed.

Trenton H. Parker distributed a controversial flyer asking riflemen to shoot and kill the horses. He says he is frustrated with code enforcement officials in Weld County and is threatening to kill the horses to protest a 90-day jail sentence stemming from an order to clean up the rural property where he lives.

Authorities said Parker was found in contempt of court for failing to remove converted mobile homes from the property around his home between the towns of Fort Lupton and Lochbuie, about 20 miles northwest of Denver. They say he's running a "non-commercial junkyard."

...

Despite his affection for the horses he cares for, Parker says the first horse to be executed would be a Russian-Arabian horse named "Independence." He says it would be a symbolic gesture indicating that too much government control leads to the death of independence.

Parker says executing the horses would be more humane than having the government auction them off to a meat market.

"In the meat market, what they do is the just club them to death, break their skulls with an axe," Parker said. "They just take an axe and they crush their skulls."

1. I doubt this comment...
"In the meat market, what they do is the just club them to death, break their skulls with an axe," Parker said. "They just take an axe and they crush their skulls."

I worked in a slaughterhouse (albeit, only for one night on the cleaning crew), and it was my understanding that cattle were killed with a shot to the head from an air gun. I don't think they were "clubbed to death."

And I resent the "reporter" not clearing this up before printing it...

5. But there are no horse slaughterhouses in the US.
They are shipped to Mexico and they are killed in barbaric ways. I read they are stabbed multiple times in the spine. There was an article in Salon.com

7. In the US yes
that's how we slaughter animals, and it's fairly painless (as far as we know).

However, we banned slaughtering horses here (although it is still legal to buy horsemeat, go figure). So it's being done in mexico.

So really who knows? He could be right on this.

10. I'm not only angry with his reckless comment...
...but with the "reporter" for not delving into this further. I mean, what could it hurt? Why couldn't the "reporter" ask him about slaughtering horses? He'd either have to admit it's not done here, or simply say he wasn't sure it was done in the manner he described. I mean, why couldn't the reporter delve a little deeper into the comment?

11. I don't know
laziness probably.

Or not wanting to scatter the focus of the article with minutia?

12. Because some nutcases got U.S. horse slaughterhouses closed, ...
horses are sent to barbaric slaughterhouses in countries that don't effectively regulate.

8. Unfortunately it's way too easy
for unhinged people to acquire large numbers of animals/children.

14. I would think his statements alone would be enough to remove the animals from his care.
There are countless reasons a rancher may shoot his own animals but I would think "revenge" moves the shootings in to the "animal cruelty" category.

18. Why so I have a sneaking suspicion that this man is very religious.
They seem to be the only ones who have no regard for animal life. After all the bible said man has dominion over all things on earth. What a great book.
