LONDON — Two more soldiers were killed Monday in an explosion in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence announced, bringing the death toll of British troops serving there since 2001 to 210.

"It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that two soldiers from The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, have been killed," it said in a statement.

"The soldiers were killed as a result of an explosion that happened whilst on a foot patrol north of Lashkar Gah District, southern Helmand Province on the morning of August 31, 2009."

Prime Minister Gordon Brown made a surprise visit to Helmand on Saturday to visit troops, where he thanked them for their efforts in fighting insurgents in the build-up to the presidential election on August 20.
