(Easton PA) State Theatre sticks with Glenn Beck show despite NAACP request to cancel
Source: The Morning Call

Easton's State Theatre isn't changing its plans to host controversial Fox News commentator Glenn Beck, despite a request from the Easton branch of the NAACP.

In a letter, the Easton NAACP had called on the theater to cancel Beck's Jan. 9 appearance in the wake of his July 28 on-air statements, in which he referred to President Barack Obama -- whose mother is white -- as a "racist" with a "deep-seated hatred for white people."

Merrill Fennell, Easton president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, wrote "such accusations echo the 'race baiting' that is a sad part of our political history." Institutions that condone those kinds of remarks are "permitting appeals to the same fears, insecurity and stereotypes that led to generations of discrimination against African-Americans," Fennell wrote.

His Aug. 24 letter was addressed to State Theatre President Shelley Brown, who responded today that "discussions like this are very important" but declined to cancel the show.

"It would be inconsistent and difficult for us to cancel a show for remarks made by one entertainer and not cancel others who may have also been perceived as controversial," Brown wrote in a letter to Fennell.

5. that is the way to go, HAwkeye..
WE locals in the Lehigh Valley need to write and tell
the State that we will no longer patronize their theater
venue...

And yes, there are many who think Beck is a hoot...
sadly, these are the same misguided folks who think
our public education is going down the toilet...
paradox?
