Dalai Lama under 'gag order' from Taipei
Source: Taipei Times

By Jenny W. Hsu
STAFF REPORTER, WITH AGENCIES
Thursday, Sep 03, 2009

"The Dalai Lama's nephew said the government had put a “gag order” on the exiled religious leader out of fears of Beijing’s reaction. The Dalai Lama traveled on a high-speed train from Kaohsiung after two days focused on the plight of communities devastated by Typhoon Morakot...'It's very surprising that Taiwan, which is a vibrant democracy, will put a gag order on anyone. But this time, they decided to do it, because of the improvement of relations across the Taiwan straits,' he said.

“They put a gag order on him. Before he left India he was told not to say anything political and to curtail his activities,” said Thondup, also a member of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile in India. “This was conveyed to our office in New Delhi. He was told to cut down even religious activities.

1. That's not a "gag order," it advice.
Taiwan's leaders of course value relations with the mainland of China, and simply advised this former leader of a "government-in-exile" not to conduct actions harmful to China. Taiwan is part of China too.

2. oh well, if it's advice...
that's a horse of a different color!

Thanks for your advice but just so you know, Taiwan does not 'belong' to China, never has, never will.

It WAS invaded by China,(the Republic of China) witch doesn't even exist anymore, Japan, Holland, Spain, even US occupied at times, but belong to, no sorry. That is just fantasy.

Taiwan belongs to Taiwan

Now go sell crazy somewhere else

3. No thanks, I belong here.
Telling people to go "elsewhere" is ridiculous. I am a Democrat and progressive who works hard for good causes and I belong right here. I just don't agree with you on China issues.

Even the Taiwan leaders state that Taiwan is part of China. Every single government around the world also agrees, including the US.

I say that it's "advice" because there was no penalty to the Dalai Lama, and it's extremely doubtful that if he were to speak out in any way, that there would be retribution by Taiwan.

China will definitely be reunified.

5. Taiwan and the rest of the world have been cowered

by Red China into de-recognizing Taiwan diplomatically. In reality Taiwan has been sovereign for the last 60 years and deserves its independence from an oppressive, autocratic, and antidemocratic government that's never been there before.

Keep Taiwan free!

7. "Red China?" That's very McCarthyite sounding.
I don't believe that term is very popular outside the John Birch Society and, for some reason, a section of Cold War-style liberals. China is not threatening to invade Taiwan. 23 states in the world do recognize the "Republic of China on Taiwan." But NO country recognizes and independent Taiwan, because it does not exist and hasn't existed. It is ironic that the KMT is responsible for the extreme sinicization of Taiwan - more than 98% of people on Taiwan are Han Chinese.

I do not believe that if reunification occurred, that the social and economic system practices in Taiwan would change. Hong Kong is a good example in that regard.

10. The PRC (happy?) doesn't own Han Chinese
anymore than Spain owns the Spanish of the world. The fact that Taiwan is mostly Han is irrelevant.
Taiwan IS independent whether or not anybody recognizes that or not and that's what vexes the PRC. You probably do think it was okay for China to annex Tibet as well, they do have a better case for it. The PRC has never renounced the military option in forcing annexation; reunification implies Taiwan was a part of the PRC which is wasn't. Why do you think the PRC has a right to invade and eliminate the self determination of the Taiwanese.
The Taiwanese have hinted they would blow up the Three Gorges Damn if invaded, so it could very nasty.
The people of Hong Kong would rather have continued their commonwealth but that had to end.

4. Never belonged to Red China before
but I'm not sure about the never will part. I do think Taiwan has a right to its' sovereignty but doubt it will be able to hold on to it.

6. What if the government asked you to be quiet when you traveled to Puerto Rico?
but you defend this action that tells the Dalai Lama someone to be quiet?

sheesh! :wtf: :banghead:

8. I have no idea what you're talking about.
I didn't "defend" it. I clarified what really happened. Also, your analogy is inapplicable. I am a citizen of the US, and Puerto Rico is under US jurisdiction. The Dalai Lama is not a citizen of the "Republic of China on Taiwan." If he was a citizen, that's another matter. People are barred from entry into foreign countries all the time; certainly an advisement on a matter of foreign relations is hardly a sign of incipient fascism.
