Udall: I'm 'best candidate' (for Colorado Senate seat) | Denver Post
Udall: I'm 'best candidate'
Congressman's potential Senate bid frustrates national Dems

By Julia C. Martinez
Denver Post Capitol Bureau

Post / Lyn Alweis
Although U.S. Rep. Mark Udall says he is the "best
candidate" for the Democrats if he decides to run
for the Senate seat being vacated by Ben Nighthorse
Campbell, national party leaders so far are standing
behind Rutt Bridges, hoping to avoid a major primary.

U.S. Rep. Mark Udall pronounced himself the best potential Democratic candidate to succeed Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell but stopped short of saying he would seek the seat.

Democratic leaders in Washington, however, did not stop short of saying Udall should stay out of the tumult created after Campbell's announcement last week that he would finish his term but not seek re-election.

"I can't think of a more exciting opportunity," Udall told reporters Friday. "I've got deep Colorado roots. I would love to serve the entire state as a U.S. senator."

Udall, 53, declared himself "the best candidate for the Democratic Party in November, if I so decide to run."

3. Oh God! Not a representative from Boulder!!!
I mean, EVERYONE in Colorado knows that they're just a bunch of hippy communists who don't believe in God. No... no... BOULDER!!!! It's like... California (ominous music). AAAAAAARRRRGGHHHH

That's the reaction he'll get outside of Boulder and Denver. The Puebloans might vote for him because of the D next to his name. That's about it.

4. Bush policy on environment bad for Colorado
People who live there are finding out that Bush is out to let the extraction industry ruin their property values.

They don't like it. Udall is a strong defender of the environment.

I can't believe he's the same age his dad was when he ran for president.

How time flys.

6. Remembering Mo Udall
An obit on Mo Udall from 1998:

http://www.goodbyemag.com/nov98/udall.html

Snip:

"(Morris) Udall’s legacy is secure, despite encroachments on the Alaska wilderness. The western-most point in the country, in Guam, and the eastern-most point, in the Virgin Islands, are both named Udall Point, in honor of his environmental work. This year (1998) both his son, Mark Udall, and his nephew, Tom Udall, were both elected to Congress; both ran on pro-environmental platforms."

Woudn't it be great to have a Senator Udall now?

7. Mo Udall--what could have been
I supported Mo Udall for President in 1974 and worked my ass off over 2 years for him. I just look back at what could have been done if he had won and how far America has deviated from his dream

:-(

8. What could have been continued
Just out of sick, masochistic sense of political trivia interest and not being disrespectful, do you know, off hand, which candidate had more second finishes, Rep. Udall or Sen. Edwards?
