President Obama on health bill: 'I own it'

President Obama tells Steve Kroft in an interview airing Sunday at 7 p.m. ET on CBS News' "60 Minutes: "I intend to be president for a while and once this bill passes, I own it. ... So I have every incentive to get this right.”

The interview was taped Friday night at the White House, as part of an administration media blitz following his address to a joint session of Congress.

In an excerpt released by "60 Minutes," Obama said: “I have no interest in having a bill get passed that fails. That doesn't work. You know, I intend to be president for a while and once this bill passes, I own it. And if people look and say, ‘You know what? This hasn't reduced my costs. My premiums are still going up 25 percent, insurance companies are still jerking me around.’ I'm the one who's going to be held responsible. So I have every incentive to get this right.”

1. K&R - it sounds like he wants to take ownership and accountability of this.
I WILL give him the benefit of the doubt.

Oh, and Congress should be held responsible too.

3. He's not speaking to us...
"I have every incentive to get this right."

His message isn't directed to us little people - it's directed to the insurance companies. Because the way this is shaping up, this bill is going to be just right for them, and a real screwing for the rest of us.

5. And you know this HOW??
Got some mental telepathy goin' on there huh? I don't think you even LIKE our President. I can tell...just from your words. No telepathy required!!!

9. Telepathy? Um... my comment wasn't meant to be taken literally.
It was a reference to the mega-sell-out this bill is shaping up to be. I generally presume a pretty high level of intelligence here and tend not spell everything out in very precise terms.

"I don't think you even LIKE our President."

We aren't in junior high, and the word "LIKE" shouldn't be the defining term of our relationship to politicians. It demonstrates a poor understanding of one's role as a citizen. It's not about "LIKE". It's about job performance. It's about what politicians actually DO (not what they say). And so far, Obama's job performance has been shit on the things that matter most. I supported Dennis Kucinich in the Iowa caucuses and I'd be saying the same thing about him if he was President and performing miserably. It doesn't (and shouldn't) matter a whit whether I "LIKE our President". If he sells the people out to the corps, I'll kick him to the curb whether I "LIKE" him or not.

30. IOWA you're absolutely right.
The republicans have been in bed with defense companies for the last 40 -years - since the 70's, - that I can remember.

The democrats have been in bed with the insurance industry.

It's embarrassing to see there are people here that don't know that.

Most see where Clinton sold us out now - especially on free trade which set up the outsourcing so companies have few if any penalties for selling us products not made with our labor. Will it really take them a decade away from Obama to see that he didn't run and get elected on the people alone, he is backed by the same backers of Clinton and some of bush. He has to answer to them.

I believe he will try his best for us, but at the great cost of seeing private coffers in the insurance industry well funded first.

He did sell us out on the bail out - that was a corporate give away. At least I believe he had to, to get elected in the first place, but he will try to do some good while he's here. Bush never had plans to do any good.

6. It's directed at his critics
Who claim they are trying to "rush it through", and cite a need to slow things down to "get it right."

When what they really want is to kill the bill.

The Public Option is sham.

Anything less than Public Option and the Insurance Companies are still in business.

Fuck them all.

10. Right, because we all know there are the votes in Congress for single payer if only
the president would "push for it." Obama took all kinds of heat after an old video surfaced of him speaking favorably of single payer. It is dead as a doornail politically.

11. The speech was the turning point. Support for the public option soared according to CBS poll
The speech was crafted not only with elegance but with substance. That's why all, and I mean ALL polls show that Americans' support for the health care reform bill spiked immediately afterwards.

19. What public option - the tiny & minimized public option that Obama predicted

would enroll about 5% of the population?

The one that would not be available to everyone.

That isn't a public option. It is a sell out political gesture.

And, he left the door flung wide open to even get rid of that....

5% part. It was nothing more than tossing out a crumb to the masses. Let them eat cake.

32. Outline adumbrates details. The length of the speech was too short to tell the details.
Edited on Sun Sep-13-09 11:05 AM by Deja Q
(such as, what will prevent insurance companies from capping anything?)

With what was said, people think it's a giveaway. Insurance companies' stock going up - rather than down - after the speech alludes that as well.

if that was the case, all the money spent on the sinkhole of Iraq would have been footed primarily by the poor red Southern states.
