GOP pushing Sen. Giuliani
Source: NY Post

Top state Republicans will urge former Mayor Rudy Giuliani to abandon his interest in running for governor and run instead against unelected US Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, The Post has learned.

The appeal, expected within a few weeks, comes in the wake of Giuliani's embarrassing defeat in his effort to block Manhattan lawyer Ed Cox, ex-President Richard Nixon's son-in-law, from becoming the state GOP chairman.

"I am picking up no support for Rudy for governor, but I'm hearing his name mentioned for US Senate," one of the state's most influential elected Republicans, a Cox supporter, told The Post.

...snip...

One GOP leader said Republicans were struck by "the poor quality of Rudy's statewide political operation" as he backed Niagara County GOP Chairman Henry Wojtaszek against Cox.

Much better to follow in the footsteps of his 2000 Senate campaign, and run against someone more popular than the Governor...

1. He has a chance.
Because I can't be the only one enraged that Gillibrand is not facing a primary.

5. You might be.
99% of the people I know who are involved in state politics are very happy with Gillibrand.

6. Because you don't like her, or you just feel we need one?
Gov. Paterson handled the appointment horribly, but I have no objection to her performance to date, and Congresswoman Maloney was planning to run as much for for ambition as for differences in policy.

14. Because I never got to vote for her.
If she feels my vote is unnecessary in the primary, I have assured her it will also be unnecessary in the general.

The issue isn't her sunny and winning personality. The issue is disenfranchisement.

And I do not consider ambition a bad reason for running. Or I wouldn't have been able to vote for anyone for the last forty-two years.

3. Sure, Rudy--instead of the governorship, run for an office you have no chance
of obtaining.

7. uhhh why really why push someone to run for an office that he has a lesser chance of winning
really the facts are if Rudy runs against Paterson he will win so why discourage him from doing so it just doesn't seem like good politics to me.

8. I'm going to flip it around...
The Republicans think:

1. Paterson can be beaten

2. Rudy will screw it up (again)

3. Better to farm him out to the tougher Senate race since they'll probably lose anyway, and try to find a stronger Governor candidate (Jeanine Pirro?)

13. UPDATE - RICK LAZIO will run for Gov
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 05:40 PM by brooklynite
from NY 1:

Former Congressman Rick Lazio, a Republican, said today that he will run for governor.

He is set to make the formal announcement next Monday.

Lazio is best known for his run for the Senate in 2000 against Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Let's review 2000, shall we?

1. Rudy Giuliani floats a Senate campaign.

2. Rudy's campaign falls flat, and he withdraws.

3. Rick Lazio replaces Rudy as Republican nominee.

4. Lazio is pounded in the November election.

What could go wrong?

15. Rudy has nowhere else to go
I thought the idea of Rudy in the Senate was put to rest years ago. Rudy's a prima donna and does not play well with others.

Rudy himself discounted Albany right after 9/11. He considered himself and his princess bride destined for greater things than life in that lackluster town. After all, they summer in The Hamptons.

Now he finds himself with the same choices. Lotsa luck.
