Federal, local agents raid New York City residences as part of terrorism investigation

Law enforcement agents have raided residences in New York City as part of a terrorism investigation, and are preparing to brief Congress about the investigation.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne confirms that searches were conducted in the borough of Queens on Monday by agents of a joint terrorism task force. He would not discuss the matter further.

Separately, federal authorities planned to brief senior lawmakers in Congress on the case later Monday.

Update:

Two U.S. intelligence officials, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly, said the target of any purported attack — or who would carry it out — remained unclear.

Authorities have not found any weapons ready for use — such as a bomb — that would indicate an attack was imminent, they said. Nevertheless, one of the officials called the threat very real and emphasized the urgency of the threat.

Another person briefed on the matter, who was not authorized to discuss the case and requested anonymity, said the raids were the result of previous law enforcement surveillance of individuals.

The investigation is continuing.

NY homes raided in terror probe

Homes in New York have been raided in relation to a "terrorism investigation", the city's police say.

Local police and FBI agents executed search warrants on residences in the borough of Queens, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said.

He said it was "part of an ongoing terrorism taskforce investigation", without going into details.

Federal agents are due to brief senior members of Congress about the case, the Associated Press news agency reports.

The raids are the result of previous surveillance of individuals, the AP quoted an unidentified person briefed on the matter as saying.

It's just as likely they're Christian militia or other domestic group from the reich-wing fringe. In fact, that's what stuck out for me most in the OP: no mention of foreign nationals or extremist groups.
