Officers allegedly used inmate as prison fighter

Posted on Wednesday, 09.16.09

A prison sergeant and two former officers used an inmate known as `Monster' to beat up troublesome inmates at Dade Correctional Institution, a federal indictment alleges.

Around the state prison in Florida City, his alias was ``Monster.''

The inmate's real name: Larry T. Williams.

Three officers at the Dade Correctional Institution used him as a weapon to beat up other inmates with disciplinary problems, according to a federal indictment unsealed Tuesday.

Prison Sgt. Obe D. L'Bert, 30, along with former officers Cordell J. White, 22, and Christopher W. Bonnet, 21, were charged with conspiracy and civil rights violations of inmates. Williams, 28, a former inmate at DCI, was charged in the three-count indictment, too.

Williams, sentenced in January 2007 for a cocaine-possession conviction in Broward County, was released in May from the Charlotte Correctional Institution. His most current address was in Hollywood, according to the state Department of Corrections.

The head of the department called the alleged violations ``unconscionable.''

2. This is simply the past repeating itself -- upon the overturning of the reforms - !!!
Cruel and brutal people are running our prisons again --

with the rise of the right!

What's new?

Alger Hiss played a large part in reforming our prisons -- which might give

some indication as to why he seems to have been framed -- and why there was

a purge of liberals in government by the right-wing during the McCarthy Era ...

The McCarthy Era . . . "an attack on the ideals of democracy" -- Molly Ivins

7. We should make it harder to become one

Psychological testing of candidates should be mandatory.

You'll weed out a lot of these types by doing so.

9. We can do better than that.
The system should be overhauled.

10. No but there needs to be some serious and I mean SERIOUS
psycholigical evaluation before hiring them. Also, and this is a big part of it...we have got to stop glorifying cops in these cop tv shows. So often when I have watched COPS on TV I have seen them belittle and disrespect the SUSPECT (not convicted criminal) and it's laughed off or exalted..that shit needs to stop!

4. When you hand over the care and treatment of prisoners...
to a profit making company...what else do you expect?
They have practically no over sight and no accountability.

6. Is this particular prison
one of those that is under the control of a profit making company or is it administered and staffed by the State of Florida?
