The Globe and Mail “Peace and security” and our “common mission in Afghanistan” were key elements of an Oval Office meeting today, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said after 90 minutes of face time with Barack Obama.
The U.S. President said he wanted to “publicly thank Prime Minister Harper for being an outstanding partner,” a ringing endorsement.
Asked if he wanted Canada to send more troops to Afghanistan or extend the current combat commitment beyond 2011, the President said he was still analyzing what was needed in Afghanistan.
“My determination is to get this right,” Mr. Obama said. “There is no immediate decision pending” on sending more troops, added the President, who has already ordered more than 20,000 additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan this year.
