COUNTY NAACP JOINS PROTEST AGAINST “GLENN BECK DAY” IN MOUNT VERNON
Source: Sky Valley Chronicle Washington State

(REGIONAL) -- The NAACP has now added its voice to the protest against Mount Vernon Mayor Bud Norris' controversial decision to present FOX news TV and radio talk show commentator Glenn Beck with a key to the city Saturday September 26 in a $25 dollar a ticket event called "Glenn Beck Day" in Mount Vernon.

The Snohomish County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People announced its protest Friday with president Janice R. Greene, saying “Holding him up in honor stimulates the worst impulses of human nature and makes a mockery of our nation's values," highlighting Beck's inflammatory July 28th remark that he believed President Obama to be a "racist."

The statement cost Beck over three-dozen national advertisers who ordered their commercials not run within his show.

Beck is also known for such on- air musings as pondering about the killing of filmmaker Michael Moore (who’s new movie is “Capitalism: A Love Story”) and poisoning House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as well as perpetuating the long discredited "death panel" false claim about proposed health-care reform.

This sort of craziness is happening in the "blue" part of WA state?!?!??!? Wow!!! The good news in the article comes near the bottom where it's reported that the mayor of a city north of Mt.Vernon is offering Jon Stewart the keys to the city of Bellingham.

Hang on kids, the ride is likely to get a lot stranger before it ends.

1. Glad to read that there is going to be some major opposition protesting that day--
If I can, I might try to make it there and protest.

Western WA is strange--Seattle is very liberal and aside from a few other regions/cities, the other areas around Seattle can be quite conservative. I live across the Sound from Seattle and my area is probably 60% Democrats and 40% Republicans. There are also quite a few Libertarians and survivalists in the mix.

3. The whole state is kinda' bizarre
I live over in the "red" east side of the state and yet this afternoon I'll be part of a panel of Vets for Peace discussing our military experiences and possible solutions to our military/industrial economy as part of the Peace Day celebrations. Go figure.

5. Seattle local news reports
that the county chapter of Young Democrats is actively protesting and circulating a petition against it. The mayor is, apparently, not impressed. They looked so lonely out there, holding up their little non-professionally made signs. Send 'em some love if you can.

Washington is, indeed, a strange place. Very neatly divided between liberals, conservatives, libertarians, independents, etc. We do tend to be committed to whatever we believe in, whatever it is.

I'm in the bleeding heart liberal faction, m'self, but I guess that goes unsaid, considering I hang with you guys.

7.  Very neatly divided between liberals, conservatives, libertarians, independents, etc
Neatly?

Oh please!

And guess what! EVERY state is a strange mix. Usually bluer in cities and redder in the country. This does not mean that states don't have a general character or lean one way or the other, of course, But it's good, actually, to see the two color thing going. I mean red or blue, black and white? Hardly.

I'm in NC which barely went blue this year. We had Jesse Helms but we also came up with Senator Sam and stuff like the 1st state supported school for the performing arts. And thank whatever we're not SC!!!!

In this modern world that seems to be the Right losing power and its mind at the same time and the Dems finding some kind of spine, much mixup will there be. As long as something dreadful doesn't happen (something or someone gets blown up, or even worse, a Repug gets some real power!) it should be a carnival ride.

And my dh is from NC, where we met and where I lived for many years, so I understand what you mean. Love many things, cringe at many.

My daughter is a senior in high school and we're hopefully visiting there in a few weeks to check it out for next year.

What has been your experience so far?

Thanks for any info!

23. Nothing but good so far
I'm a UofW (Seattle) alumni and I told my daughter I'd prefer she not go there. Unlike my experience in the '80s at the UW my daughter has yet to have a class taught by a TA. Her largest lecture class was under 100 students (mine were up to 300.) Her professors are not dependent on research money to keep their positions so they actually seem to prepare for and take their teaching responsibilities seriously. The campus is stunningly beautiful. My daughter is pretty bright (trust me that comes from her mother's genetic contribution) and was challenged to push herself and excel. In the 3 yrs she's attended thus far she's had one professor that was a dud and he's been let go already. Other than that, besides carping (but not really) about the expectations that have been placed on her, no complaints so far. For the price you pay I feel you get an excellent value for your money.

The proximity of Vancouver, BC makes it possible to travel to a truly international city and rub shoulders with people not completely dumbed down by the US mass media.

I would not hesitate to recommend WWU to any undergraduate wanting to get a well rounded education.

30. Thanks so much for the input, Old Time Pagan--
it sounds like exactly what we are looking for!

My daughter is very bright and artistic and needs an open, liberal-minded place to study. She would also like to attend a college that has an emphasis on social justice and a true global sense, and I think from everything I've read, Western U embraces that.

I just hope they have a good financial aid program. Our finances (due to the economy) really suck right now.

Thanks so much for the info!

21.  I checked out the KOMO (Seattle) news website on this story--
and the comments were filled with racist trash about the NAACP.

I can't believe that many people in the Seattle area would post such racist garbage. It makes me wonder about the majority of the country if those sorts of things are posted in Seattle.

I hope they've cleaned up the comments by now. There were several alerts.

Edited on Sat Sep-19-09 08:38 PM by ribrepin
It's probably a group of sixteen year olds getting their jollies for the day. Seattle is pretty liberal, but some of the surrounding areas are not so much. I wonder how this is playing with the voting public in Mount Vernon? Even conservative areas around here are probably not into Glen Beck all that much.

24. I emailed the mayor about this, said I wanted a response from him
as to why he thought this was a good idea, given Beck's on-screen screeds, but of course, I did not get an answer.

If I were a resident of Mt. Vernon, I would be sickened by this. Hell, I'm a resident of Seattle, and I'm STILL sicked by it.

33. “Take The Field With Glenn Beck” Safeco 9/26
Anyone hear about the EFF’s “Take The Field With Glenn Beck” extravaganza at Safeco this Saturday (9/26)?

My oppo-research department (spouse) has uncovered this side event to Glenn getting the key to the city in Mt. Vernon.

http://www.glennbeckseattle.com

From the website:

“These are difficult days in terms of the economy and the growing chasm between citizens and their government. Glenn Beck is a powerful spokesman for shrinking that chasm.”

You’ll have to sit in the stands to learn how to shrink the chasm. The diggers of the trench will have the premium seats ($100 to $500) that are all sold out. The ones where you get close enough to the great whacko commentator to touch his sleeve.

http://www.glennbeckseattle.com/tickets.php

I’m just askin’. This doesn’t seem like a spoof. Right here in Seattle, people are willing to pay big bucks to have a tea party. If it is a spoof, State Senator Pam Roach has fallen for it, she’ll be flying her mother in for the family values event. It wasn’t mentioned if she’ll be in a sheet.

34. Nope, it's not a spoof
makes me rather pleased that I live on the other side of the mountains. Got to admit this bullshit makes my original story look like small potatoes in comparison.

Well we are living in transformational times and that scares the living shit out of a lot of people. Tough to make good choices and pay attention to sane people when your scared silly.

For an interesting and disturbing look into the warped, twisted, dare I say psychotic mind of Mr. Beck here's a good read:
