Serbian gay parade is called off
Source: bbc

A Gay Pride march in Serbia has been called off after police told organisers they could not guarantee its safety.
...
Anti-gay groups had threatened violence if the march were allowed to go ahead. "We're expecting you" posters had been stuck around the Serbian capital.
...
The ultra-nationalist Serb Popular Movement 1389 hailed the cancellation of Sunday's march as "a great victory for normal Serbia".

"In our city infidels and Satanists will not pass," it added.

haha ;) - wow, democracy in serbia is in good health i see.
another one of the posters read also something like: gay parade is a shame to belgrade.

the same good ol' guys who in the late 90's and early 2000 went hailing as heroes the butchers of the balkan war, the rapists in uniforms?
who knows. maybe some are their sons, grown up in a dubious atmosphere of democracy.

good luck serbia!

4. why do ultra-nationalism and anti-gay bigotry go so well together?
they don't seem to be related, but at least back to Hitler they seem to go hand in hand.

10. Read up on right-wing screeds about "social Marxism"
There are many right-wing nationalist types that associate homosexuality with a attempt by "TEH EVUL COMMIES" to destroy their culture, using some lame ideas of the Frankfurt School of sociology as "proof".

12. IMO Europe is actually more bigoted and racist than the US is, it's just...
...that most of Europe is good at hiding it as a result of the Nazis, and because Neo-Nazi symbols are banned in many European countries.

The most racist person I know is a DUTCH guy studying at my university I ran into. :wow:

13. Not that good at hiding it, if you read some of the tabloids!
My general impression is that Europaeans tend to be less *religiously* bigoted, but at least as racist and xenophobic, as Americans. In both parts of the world, there are huge regional differences.
