Ex-NY Giant Burress gets 2 years in gun case
Source: AP

NEW YORK – Former Super Bowl star Plaxico Burress was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison after accidentally shooting himself in the thigh at a nightclub and later reaching a plea deal on weapons charges.

The former New York Giants star tearfully told his family goodbye as he surrendered to begin his prison stint for attempted criminal possession of a weapon.

Burress was indicted on two counts of weapon possession and one count of reckless endangerment and pleaded guilty Aug. 20. He had faced a minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years on those charges if convicted at trial. He pleaded to the lesser charge and agreed to the two-year term.

With time off for good behavior, Burress likely will serve 20 months. He will be monitored an additional two years after he is freed from prison, which could come as early as the spring of 2011.

1. Pro football star shoots himself with a gun: Two years....
pro football star kills someone with a car: 30 days.

Our "justice" system never ceases to amaze me, and not in a good way.

2. He's obviously an idiot but this seems a bit harsh
Especially when viewed alongside the Stallworth incident.

Did it happen because NYC is trying to make a statement about gun ownership?

5. It doesn't seem harsh to me..
He brought an unlicensed weapon into a crowded club and accidentally discharged it. He could have killed someone. And what if, while drunk, he decided to use the weapon to defend himself against another patron looking for trouble.. a shootout may have ensued. After all, that IS the reason why he brought the gun to the club in the first place. He should have just hired a armed bodyguard.

7. If that had happened, and he had killed someone, then he could be tried for murder.
I have a problem with sending someone to prison for what might have happened.

17. You must really hate MADD and the police state they turn our roads in to on Friday nights.
But, yes, I tend to agree with you.

6. There were mandatory minimums involved in the sentencing.
Indeed, the two years was the result of Burress pleading down to a lesser charge. Had he been convicted in a trial, he faced a minimum of 3.5 years.

Like most major cities, NYC has really strict gun laws.

10. I recently had three highwaymen attempt to rob my girlfriend and I while on vacation
Edited on Tue Sep-22-09 01:13 PM by Old Hob
two were circling around the car looking in the windows while the third acted as a lookout and while I pumped gas at a gas station which was closed for the day but had left its pumps running for CC purchases only. I had thousands of dollars on me and a truckload full of expensive equipment. The most important piece of equipment that day was the .357 magnum that I was legally carrying. I made constant eye contact with one of the thugs while my left hand was wrapped around the gas pump handle and the other was wrapped around the gun ready to draw. he knew what my right hand was holding and, as such, he shook his head at his partner and they all quickly and quietly slithered away without incident and then we got the fuck out of that town. I was real glad to be a gun totin' asshole that day I can tell you.

Dear Guns and Ammo,

I've only read about stories like these before in your ultra-fab magazine and never thought it would happen to me, but one day...

15. I would love to hear the other side of the story.
They are probably on some other forum telling how they stopped for an oil change, only to find the store closed, when some freaky trucker tried to make eyes with them and invite them in to the toilet for a quickie.

16. Typical. You'll make a great victim someday. I'd love to hear about it when it happens.
Maybe you can defend yourself with your snarky retorts? Me, I'll stick with my .357 and be thankful that I live in a state and a country where stupid fucks with retarded viewpoints haven't completely taken over.

13. Seems like a reasonable penalty
he had a gun illegally in his possession and mishandled putting others at risk, but most likely he wasn't malicious, just an idiot.

Two years should give him ample time to think about what he did.
