Gadhafi Slams UN Security Council
Source: Yahoo News

Excerpt:
UNITED NATIONS – In his first U.N. appearance, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi issued a slashing attack on the Security Council and chastised the world body on Wednesday for failing to intervene or prevent some 65 wars since the U.N. was founded in 1945.

Gadhafi called for reform of the council — abolishing the veto power of the five permanent members — or expanding the body with additional member states to make it more representative.

"It should not be called the Security Council, it should be called the "terror council," he said. :wow:

The veto-wielding Security Council powers -- the United States, Britain, China, France and Russia -- treat smaller countries as "second class, despised" nations, Gadhafi said.

"Now, brothers, there is no respect for the United Nations, no regard for the General Assembly," Gadhafi said.

His speech followed President Barack Obama's first General Assembly address, but not before a recess of some 15 minutes was called by the Libyan president of the General Assembly so diplomats could be take new seats.

The U.S. Mission was represented by two low- to mid-ranking diplomats. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice departed before Gadhafi ascended the podium.

After waiting for the room to settled, Gadhafi rose and swept his robe over him and strode to the stage, using the handrail on his way up. He wore a shiny black pin in the shape of Africa pinned over his heart, on his brown and tan Bedouin robes.

Since the world body was founded in 1945, Gadhafi said it had failed to prevent or intervene in dozens of wars around the world.

"But 65 aggressive wars took place without any collective action by the United Nations to prevent them, Gadhafi said.

4. Gadhafi...
should think himself very lucky that the UN Security Council is NOT more powerful and more concerned about the world at large.

6. I'm not the one who wants the UN Security Council to act as a powerful 'enforcer'!
In fact, definitely not. It would end as just another form of imperialism.

I just think it's pretty hypocritical for Gaddafi to recommend it, when he clearly doesn't want to keep to any rules himself.

But to another point: do you seriously think Gaddafi is equivalent to an oppressed trade union member? He's pretty good at oppressing and killing people himslelf, especially in his own country. And no I don't want outsiders to come along and invade Libya 'for its own good'; but it's a bit much for Gaddafi to apparently recommend the same for other countries.

Probably time spent analyzing him is time wasted, anyway; most of what he says is insane.

8. No. I'm saying that the Sec Council is a lot like Anaconda Mining Co.
Willing to kill because (corporate) might is right.

Your comment reminded me of the very same sentiment represented by the AMC to the IWW ... 'Consider yourselves lucky we don't do you in.'

No doubt he's a displeasing character, but even displeasing characters make a valid point now and then.

10. The point was that he was recommending that the security council be tougher with OTHER countries
I have nothing to do with the UNSC, nor do I particularly like them.

I was pointing out the hypocrisy of Gaddafi's statement.

I suppose if a member of one union had been suggesting that the Anaconda Mining Company bully *other* trade unions, this might be a little like what Gaddhafi said. I doubt that any would have done so, however.

I think that Gaddafi is much more like the Anaconda Mining Company than like the union members. So of course are many other leaders.

Is it just me or does he look completely spent like a Baldwin brother on a bender? His youthful terrorist days are well behind him...

11. Moammar Gadhafi Rants at U.N. General Assembly
Edited on Wed Sep-23-09 08:32 PM by jakeXT
...

In a 90-minute speech before the U.N., Gadhafi delivered a halting and often rambling address in which he seemed to speak off the cuff, continually referring to notes scribbled on pages torn from a notebook.

Gadhafi railed against the U.N.'s power structure, the war in Iraq, suggested the H1N1 flu virus was a military conspiracy, called for a new investigations into the assassinations of President Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., and demanded European countries repay African countries for their colonial plunders.

Amid his rant, Gadhafi praised President Obama, who spoke just before him. He began his speech by congratulating Obama on his election. Later he referred to him as "our son" and suggested he remain in power for life.

12. Are there no filibusters at the UN General Assembly?
Gaddafi was being an asshole here obviously. And he doesn't know about the 22nd Amendment (term limits for US Presidents) doesn't he? It's disgusting to see him hating on America and espousing conspiracy theories after a beautifully crafted speech by Obama.

13. ah well the birth certificate thing
Referencing Obama as "my son," Qaddafi said: "We are happy that a young African Kenyan was voted for and made president. Obama is a glimpse in the dark for the next four years, but I'm afraid we may go back to square one.
