Justice Ginsburg hospitalized
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) - Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been hospitalized after becoming ill in her office at the court.

A statement from the court said the 76-year-old justice was taken to Washington Hospital Center at 7:45 p.m. EDT as a precaution. It said Ginsburg had received treatment earlier in the day for an iron deficiency that was discovered over the summer.

About an hour later, she began to feel faint.

Ginsburg underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer in February but returned to work quickly.

22. NOT UNWELL.
Clearly you're not a press-pro!

'She said at the time that she wanted to match the tenure of Justice Louis Brandeis, who served for more than two decades and retired at age 82. . . Nominated by President Bill Clinton, Ginsburg took her seat on the Supreme Court on Aug. 10, 1993.'

3. While I appreciate their service to the country, I am concerned about health.
Whether its Senator Byrd or Justice Ginsberg - I hope they take some time to enjoy their later years and take care of themselves. No one on their death bed laments that they didn't spend more time at work.

16. I suspect these two people would lament the fact that they took time
for themselves while the country was burning. In the next election I would hope that Byrd would retire and I hope Ginsberg can also retire but we desperately need her vote on this corporation person-hood thing.

26. gotta go before the end of Obama's first term
Sorry to say it, but for the good of the country Justice Ginsberg had better be planning the end of her tenure in the next couple of years. It would be disaster if a republican were allowed to pick her replacement.

5. Justice Ginsburg at Washington Hospital Center
Source: Washington Post

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is at Washington Hospital Center this evening after falling ill at the Supreme Court this afternoon. Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said Ginsburg fell ill after receiving an intravenous iron therapy. Arberg said Ginsburg, who has been battling pancreatic cancer, felt better after being attended by a physician at the court, but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

A statement from the court follows:

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was taken to the Washington Hospital Center this evening after feeling ill in her Chambers earlier in the day. The Justice felt ill at 4:50 p.m., about an hour after an iron sucrose infusion to treat an iron deficiency anemia that was administered at the Office of the Attending Physician.

The Justice underwent a comprehensive assessment of health in July 2009. This involved medical evaluation, imaging scans, and comprehensive blood tests. The result of this evaluation was that she was in completely normal health with the exception of a low red blood cell count caused by deficiency of iron. Intravenous iron therapy was administered in a standard fashion.

7. She would be such a loss. I hope she resigns quickly and that
we get a new Justice within a few weeks.

She should live out her life in private without this heavy burden upon her.

So much going on in DC these days, I hope she can leave and be quickly replaced.

12. Hopefully, she is alright, but it is also naive to ignore the fact that she has or had a
very serious condition, and as insensitive as this may sound, if there is any chance whether it be Stephens, Ginsburg, or any of the other moderate to liberal judges that they may not serve out their term, they should step down to bring in someone younger while we have the votes

The stakes are way too important, and the 2010 election is far from certain, though I do not believe it is as bad as the impression the media is trying to give either

That does not mean I wish her or anyone bad, it is just that most of the liberals on the court are getting older, and that should be kept in mind, since the other side of the court is much younger

37. If, heaven forfend, a Republican wins in 2012 or 2016, she should step down before the next
Inauguration, IMO. And, I believe she may well do that, regardless of her comment about wanting to stay on the Court unil the very end. Otherwise, she should stay as long as she wants.

She still believes she has so much left to do in the time given her -- I say this because otherwise Justice Ginsburg would already be retired.

25. Really. And I don't believe we can hope for another woman this time around.
So it'll be back to having one lone woman on the bench. And, considering the squawking & manufactured outrage of Republicans against the very moderate Sotomayor, we'd be extraordinarily lucky to get someone who even comes close to Ginsberg's liberalism. No, I'm in no hurry to see her go, even aside from how appalling I find it that people here want to give her the bum's rush out the door.

The only upside there might be is that a nomination now might spread the Republicans thin on being disruptive & obstructionist. Health care reform AND a liberal Supreme Court nominee??? All that high dudgeon might get a few of them to stroke out :)

19. iron problem
I suspect and hope it may be the iron treatment that is the problem here, and not cancer. When I was diagnosed with an iron deficiency, I was told the intravenous treatment was dangerous and should be avoided.

A lot of people can't tolerate iron pills due to GI effects, but most can if they can get the ferrous gluconate form, which any pharmacy should be able to order.

'She returned to work quickly and hasn't missed a day of work since. In March she said the operation had been ''a complete, successful, surgical removal'' of the cancer. However, she also said she was to undergo chemotherapy treatment.

A common side effect of chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer is anemia.'

http://www.businessinsider.com/henry-blodget-time-for-apple-to-finally-level-with-investors-about-steve-jobs-health-2009-6

"Is he fully back in the saddle? Is he part time? Is he involved only in big strategic decisions? Is he back to his old micromanaging self? Have we now reached the point, in other words, where his health is impinging on his ability to run Apple? That’s the real question, isn’t it? Are Mr. Jobs’s health problems affecting his work?"

http://www.macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/19779/

"He is the CEO of a very PUBLIC company. He gave up that privacy when he as CEO handled millions upon millions of investors cash. If he wants to be left alone, then I think he should resign all together."

http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/01/stevejobshealth/

"He runs a PUBLIC company, the people who own stock in apple have every right to know about a disease that could affect his ability to do the job. If he wants to keep it private then he should resign. Plain and simple."

Jobs is 54 and had islet cell carcinoma which has a relatively optimistic prognosis. Most people live more than 10 years.

Bader-Ginsberg is 76, has already survived colorectal cancer and is now probably struggling with adenocarcinoma. "The prognosis is generally poor; less than 5 percent of those diagnosed are still alive five years after diagnosis." The median survival rate is 3-6 months.

I respect her as much as anyone and would love to see her hang in there for a few more years, but I think she should seriously consider giving up the spot to someone with the time, attention and energy to devote to the job and then focus on enjoying what time she has left.

And I don't see the need to turn this into a discussion of sexist double-standards. Any 76 year old man who was as ill as Ginsberg obviously is would be pressured to resign from a position of serious responsibility in the corporate world.
