Pittsburgh businesses clean up from G-20 protests
Source: AP

PITTSBURGH – Businesses vandalized during Group of 20 protests were cleaning up broken glass and getting back to work Friday while demonstrators pledging nonviolence planned an afternoon march to protest environmental, health care and other policies.

snip...

Meanwhile, in the Oakland section of the city, five businesses near the University of Pittsburgh had windows smashed during an overnight protest. A diner, McDonald's, Rite Aid and Subway sandwich shop were among those vandalized.

Subway employee Teena Santos, a 21-year-old accounting student at Pitt, said it had been a slow, quiet evening when black-clad protesters suddenly swarmed the street and attacked the storefront. Santos said they must have used a hammer or another object to smash the window because no rocks or bricks were found. Workers and customers locked the door and waited with her until the crowd passed. "I was pretty scared, pretty shaken up," she said.

Michele Mazzella, co-owner of Pamela's Diner, said employees were at a loss to explain why their windows were broken. The business has several locations, including one that hosted first lady Michelle Obama on Friday for breakfast.

2. KNowing that most libs are non-agressive in protesting, there is a greater probability that
the violence that happened was done by reich-wing plants.

American leftists do not have the guts that Europeans or others have in confronting the forces of corporatism. That is why we send emails and peacefully march (occasionally) and do little else except have faith in the sell-outs in office to do the correct thing.

Masked rioters, reported to be from the left. Where have we seen this scenario before?

3. I'm leaning toward having anyone who's wearing a mask or bandana over his/her face
arrested when they are participating in a public event on a public street.

It seems to always be these masked thugs who start the trouble in these demonstrations.

I don't agree with the comments that left-wing demonstrators do not engage in violence and property destruction. I remember well the anti-war protests in the late 60's and 70's when there were plenty of radicals who did their best to stir up violence against the Man. Usually they were the very young and very angry types who didn't give a damn about peaceful, non-violent protest.

5.  I agree with you. Most of those breaking windows were young thugs.

10. I suspect that you are correct, JustABozoOnThisBus. Another great reason to have the
faces exposed.

11. Please explain the "down" side of this to me. We would make an exception for Halloween,
of course.

9. Wow, I thought the article was going to say..
that the businesses in Pittsburgh were making money from the G20. I saw another article earlier that the local businesses were okay with the protesters.
