Brazil VP says country should build nuclear arms
Source: AP

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) - Brazil's vice president says his country should develop nuclear weapons.

Jose Alencar says "a nuclear weapon has great importance" to prevent attacks on Brazil because of its extensive borders and maritime holdings. Alencar tells Brazilian newspapers that Brazil doesn't have a program to develop nuclear weapons, but should.

Alencar's influence is relatively limited and he is not a member of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's party. Brazilian officials insist they are developing nuclear energy only for peaceful means.

Alencar aide Adriano Silva confirms the comments published Friday by newspapers including O Globo and O Estado de Sao Paulo. He says they are personal opinions and not a position of the government.

10. Brazil VP: country needs atom bomb
Source: Agencies

Brazil's vice-president and former defence minister has said his country should develop nuclear weapons.

Jose Alencar, who led the defence ministry from 2004 to 2006, said in an interview with several Brazilian news media broadcast on Saturday that his country needed atomic weapons.

"The nuclear weapon, used as an instrument of deterrence, is of great importance for a country that has 15,000 kilometers of border to the west and a territorial sea where oil reserves have been found," he said.

Adriano Silva, an aide to Alencar, confirmed the comments published by newspapers including O Globo and O Estado de Sao Paulo.

17. sure, why not?
....what did bushco teach the world?....if you have nukes like NK, no problem, no invasion....no nukes? Sorry, you get that Iraqi 'shock and awe' treatment....distributing world resources through markets or global institutions is not good enough for rogue nations....

....in case anyone hasn't noticed, actions have consequences....

18. This is why disarmament is so important
Brazil has every right to nuclear arms. The US helped to negotiate the NPT, but it has failed to live up to the requirement to disarm, despite the end of the Cold War. If we moved even a little bit toward real disarmament, then we would have a leg to stand on with regard to India, Pakistan, Brazil, North Korea or any other state that wants what we already have, but we have not and will not, the President's claims notwithstanding.

20. "But he said
they were personal opinions and not a position of the government. Brazil's constitution prohibits nuclear weapons."

"A spokesman for Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the Brazilian president, told the Associated Press news agency that Alencar's comments "do not reflect the position of the government"."

Who is "they"?

24. Everything old is new again...
First we got the bomb, and that was good,
'Cause we love peace and motherhood.
Then Russia got the bomb, but that's okay,
'Cause the balance of power's maintained that way.
Who's next?

France got the bomb, but don't you grieve,
'Cause they're on our side (I believe).
China got the bomb, but have no fears,
They can't wipe us out for at least five years.
Who's next?

Then Indonesia claimed that they
Were gonna get one any day.
South Africa wants two, that's right:
One for the black and one for the white.
Who's next?

Egypt's gonna get one too,
Just to use on you know who.
So Israel's getting tense.
Wants one in self defense.
"The Lord's our shepherd," says the psalm,
But just in case, we better get a bomb.
Who's next?

Luxembourg is next to go,
And (who knows?) maybe Monaco.
We'll try to stay serene and calm
When Alabama gets the bomb.
Who's next?
Who's next?
Who's next?
Who's next?

25. It's a plant from the folks in Chicago who want the Olympics!
The IOC won't give the Olys to Brazil if Brazil is screaming about getting the bomb.

Either it's that or it's the anti-Oly Brazilians trying to keep Brazil from getting the Olys!

LOL:sarcasm:

I'm glad most of the government doesn't agree. There are other weapons they could develope for emergencies; but war shoujld always be the last answer, not the first.

28. Unlike other countries, they wouldn't have to buy the mats on the open market.
Brazil is already a net uranium exporter, and is already expanding its uranium mining activities. Those mines are state owned & run, so they already have all the fuel they need. The nation is so large that hiding a nuclear program until they're ready to start testing would be trivial.
