White House Calls Out Fox By Name For Lying
Edited on Wed Sep-30-09 09:14 PM by kpete
Source: Talking Points Memo

In a new post on the official White House blog, http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/Reality-Check-Turning-a-Point-of-Pride-into-a-Moment-of-Shame/ an administration official specifically names Fox News for lying about the administration's push to bring the Olympics to Chicago.

"Last night Fox News continued its disregard for the facts," the post begins, "in an attempt to smear the Administration's efforts to win the Olympics for the United States."

The author, White House online programs director Jesse Lee, goes on to point out several quotes from Glenn Beck, which it says are lies, and the truth behind them. ("Rhetoric: Beck said Vancouver lost $1 billion when it 'had the Olympics.' ... Reality: Vancouver's Olympics Will Not Take Place Until 2010.")

"In the past, hosting the Olympics has been a source of pride and unity for the country, but once again Fox News' Glenn Beck program has shown that nothing is worthy of respect if it can be used as part of a partisan attack to boost ratings," Lee writes.

45. John Titor really was from the future and he said there would be no more Olympics after 2004.
So even people who are really from the future have a hard time getting the olympics predictions right.

If you have no idea what this is in reference to, look up John Titor on Wikipedia :)

30. No.
Fox fired an anchor who refused to lie on air. She sued, and lost. The judge ruled news outlets have the right to outright lie to the American public.

It isn't just Fox either. All the major networks filed briefs in the case in support of Fox.

Even the Congress rely on news.

People should be fired for perjury and sued.\
How can we say we have values and principles if not?

They've abused the airwaves long enough.

They are poison to the American people.

While we're at it, let's yank Clear Channel's license for letting Fatty Fatburger and Guile Dreck spew their shit on the air.

37. I am gonna have to agree with Hawkeye on this one.
While I agree with your point that there's a first amendment protection. However, Fox is selling a product and that product is presenting the public with the news. Since they knowingly and intentionally lie about and distort the news, they then therefore are guilty of committing fraud and the Constitution doesn't protect fraud.

If I were Obama I would make reference to this fact when I suspend Fox personal from any access to the White House, namely White House press conferences.

BTW, I am a staunch supporter of, and the reasons for, the second amendment. Just thought I'd add that.

Peace,
Xicano

There are punishments for breaking those laws. Life in prison without trial and jailing the lawyers that would represent the defendents is not in keeping with our Constitution. I'm having trouble understanding what is so hard to understand about this and I'm definitely having trouble with Democrats defending such fascist behavior.

They don't use the "public airwaves", and are not regulated by the FCC.

I dislike FOX as much as anyone else, but government censorship is not the answer.
It is never the answer.

We need to find other ways to counter FOX (and other propaganda outlets).
Public ridicule is good.
Going after their advertisers is another.

Their lies and propaganda bring in so much money in tax breaks and friendly legal decisions that can lose billions per year in ad revenue and still be in the black.

Public ridicule? How exactly is that going to help?

No, getting them off the air one way or another is the only thing that will save America from Fox "News" and hate radio.

24. It's about time the White House started calling those yabos out by name.
Faux is the head of the hydra. If all Dems quit going on the network it would lose any credibility it has left. It needs to be called out as often as possible as the right wing propaganda machine that it is. Soon the Beck, Hannity, O'Leilly and the pairs of brain dead bimbos they put on will be so far out of touch with whats really going on in the country that they will lose what little influence they have left over geriatrics. We need to use Cheneys screwy technique of manufacturing our own reality away from theirs. Eventually they won't be relevant. The sooner we sink em the better. Exposing their lies directly is a big step. Obama needs to call em out by name every interview. Define the opposition as the nutjobs they really are. Now is the time. Call out O'Leilly for the sexual harrassment. Call out Liddy and North for their crimes. Call out Limbaugh for his drug crimes. Now is the time.

deliberate technique to conceal or limit the control of legitimate information. Fox seeks to limit legitimate discourse and offers conflicting information and conclusions that seem to support to the claims. They dump lots of stuff that can be almost immediately disproved on the air waves in a way that it actually controls group think. I don't hear many Fox viewers going "this is bullshit", when some of the outrageous claims are shoved out there. Disinformation or deliberate misinformation is designed to control and influence political discourse. Fox uses a preplanned broadcasting technique, remember how they spewed forth the Republican talking point or the * administration. It was like some said the fax machine was directly hooked up to the broadcast boot.

82. Freedom of speech, okay. Doesn't mean you can't be called out when you lie.
Nor does it mean you don't have to take responsibility for that speech. If you slander someone, they have the right to sue you. You don't have the freedom to slander someone.
If you say something that causes harm, say, inciting a violent act or getting someone fired because of a private opinion or non-criminal confidence, you can be prosecuted for it.
No where does anyone have the freedom to break the law with their speech. And no where does anyone have the freedom to not take responsibility for their actions, including speech.

The first Amendment gets misquoted all the time.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances"

Couple that with wording within the Constitution concerning treason, levying or promoting insurrection or rebellion, and "speech" promoting the overthrow of a legally elected government really does not seem to be protected under the First Amendment, no more than "speech" inciting riot or "vigilante" violence against a specific person or legal organization is.

58. Bullies know how to make good people sit down and not fight
That is what Bullies do.

Most people received "good home training" and try to ignore Bullies.

Bullies know that and make the most of it.

I am reminded of a strong willed Boss of mine...
He was speaking to an outside assembly of nearly 300 people, including young children.

A Bumble Bee started buzzing around his head as he was getting into the main part of his Speech.

All of a sudden he looked at the Bumble Bee and said, "Bumble Bee GO HOME!!"

I can still see that Bee flying off into the next block!

I say all that to say, sometimes you have to look right at the enemy and "Say it like you MEAN IT!"

That's what I love about Grayson, he had his charts and didn't stutter!

When they tried to mess with him again ~ he told them again in ABC language that he meant business!

71. How does it work - we allow cable companies to use our neighborhoods and
existing lines? and wire into our homes to deliver lies? I'm genuinely ignorant about this. I thought FCC covered the corporations not the method?

Also, if the FCC doesn't regulate, is there a way Dems can use that to an advantage? Perhaps this question is too far spreading - but why not fight back on cable?

If xxx company spends 886 thousand in advertisements and it is paid to xxx network, do they say use 400 thousand on FOX news and the balance on Fox cable or are they separate contracts? Of do they buy ads strictly by programs - what was the outcome of all those companies pulling money from Beck?

I'm not sure what I'm getting at, but there must be some sponsors who would be willng to help a Dem cable company get off the ground? What was it exactly that Al Gore gave up on - cable of FCC?

There are no regulations for cable?

Edited on Thu Oct-01-09 03:29 PM by Dr Fate
Is this being being repeated by Top DEMS in front of cameras & microphones, you know- where swing voters can hear it?

Has there been any additional effort by DEM officials to get this discussion going in the echo chamber, or is this just more "for base/bloggers eyes only" red meat?

Is this just the usual type of "statement" or "release" that we get all worked up over for nothing? You know, like a "strongly worded letter" from Harry Reid to Bush or whatever?

My larger question is: What is the follow up on this, beyond some blog text that mostly DEM loyalists are viewing & discussing?

I'm not convinced that DEMS really want to take this fight past a few "red meat" blog posts aimed at the DEM base.

If so, there's your next step right there: pull their credentials. Since those news conferences are for news organizations, and Faux is demonstrably NOT a news organization, there's no earthly reason for them being there. Yank their access, let it be known that you did, and just sit back and let them fume.

That's it. Cut off their access, and let them say anything they want. They can rename themselves as "The GOP Channel" if they're so inclined. Who cares? They'd be considered as nothing more than an "entertainment" channel for the Bottom-Feeders soon enough.

But from that day forth, they would not be treated as a legitimate news organization by the WH. Make 'em a laughing stock.

100. It's not okay to yell Fire in a crowded theater...
That's exactly what Fox is doing... on a grand scale. They are inciting panic, and real violence based on their fabrications. This is a serious issue. This is modern day Yellow Journalism.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_journalism
Every major US network is guilty to some degree or another, but FOX is leading the charge. Iraq was not the first media driven war. Newspaper mogul William Randolf Hearst played a significant role in the launch of the Spanish American War. It's our duty as citizens to take action against unethical journalism because it is quite literally a threat to the National Security of the United States.

The problem with enforcing against Fox is that it could just as easily turn around and bite us in the ass. There is no law made by us that couldn't be abused by republicans in the future.

If heaven forbid if, years from now, Sarah kriffing Palin ends up getting elected, she could revoke the licenses of legitimate news organizations because she doesn't like what they say about her.

I can't think of any type of legislation that could be used against us later. Not to mention any Congressional Democrat even thinks it there will be outcries of "SOCIALIST CENSORSHIP, blah, blah, COMMUNIST OPPRESSION, blah, NAZI, blah, FASCIST, blah, blahbity, blah blah..TAKING AWAY OUR FREE SPEECH!!"

There is another way. Whether they show it or not, Fox has been under a lot of pressure from it sponsors over Glen Beck's antics. We could turn up the heat with e-mail campaigns to the rest of Fox's sponsors and back them up with boycotts of the ones that continue to back the station. The best way to counter these greedy bastards is to hit them in their wallets.

Doesn't matter how good their ratings are, what's the point of advertising on a popular channel if you end up losing your half your customers over it. If half the country threatens to boycott, the sponsors will pull out, and spend their add dollars on more politically neutral networks.

117. I disagree that it is impossible to craft a law that won't be used against us.
I think it is possible, but that it would need to be crafted well, and the offense would need to be rooted in provable facts rather than mere opinion. I favor laws which address 1) the persistent use of known falsehoods 2) spread using a limited access medium (broadcast or cable, but not internet or print) 3) which uses public airwaves (broadcast) or highway right-of-ways (cable) 4) with the intent to manipulate public opinion 5) (and make it an aggravated offense if the manipulation is done for personal gain or to promote violence)

If you can't prove persistent use of known falsehoods, you can't stick the charges. Sure, you can just file them anyway, like Rove's favorite district atty's, but they won't stick.

Beck is a ridiculous liar but this is not something to call him out on because his overall point is actually right. The Olympics are money losers and taxpayers shouldn't be subsidizing this. Just as they shouldn't fund sports stadiums/arenas. He was probably mixing up Vancouver with Montreal, which did lose an estimated $1B and took 20 years to recover from.

A lie is a lie- and Beck lied- even still, you might have a point in that they should attack Beck over a more important issue- like the Public Option. He has lied about the Public Option many times.

One of my 1st thoughts was: Well, it's great to call them liars- but interesting that the issue is over the olympics, not something more important.

My second thought was: So what? This is just a blog post- it means nothing.
