Latham's soaring popularity reflects public relief, says poll bossMarch 9, 2004
Opposition Leader Mark Latham's stunning rise in opinion polls was a reflection of the relief among voters that they had an alternative prime minister, Newspoll boss Sol Lebovic said today.
But he said the public would determine whether Mr Latham and Labor was a viable alternative to Prime Minister John Howard once the debate on policy heated up.
The latest Newspoll showed support for Mr Latham had climbed to 62 per cent.
The result marks a milestone for the Labor leader, being the first time an opposition leader has achieved more than 60 per cent support.
In the best poll result for Labor since 2001, the party's primary vote surged six points in the past fortnight to 44 per cent.
