Shocking figures reveal sad plight of birds

By Tony Carnie

One out of every eight of the world's 10 000 different bird species are now threatened with extinction.

This is according to the latest expert report on bird conservation, State of the World's Birds 2004, which was to be launched at the BirdLife International world conservation congress in Durban on Monday.

1. The plight is even sadder for
humanity. What a sad world when only the cockroaches abound.

3. I once asked a wingnut if..
he would really want to live in a world with no birds. This during a discussion where I was being lectured on the evils of tree-hugging Communists.

He was completely confused. He had no absolutely no idea what I was talking about.

The question had never occurred to him before, and it made no sense to him.

4. Have you ever read the story about the last Spix's macaw?
Sad and touching. I'll never forget the story. He was discovered in 1990 and lived a very lonely existence for many years. As of this writing, the last Spix's macaw has disappeared and is presumed extinct in the wild.

It's a crying shame. :(
