Suspect in 1968 hijacking at JFK is captured
Source: CNN

Luis Armando Pena Soltren, 66, surrendered to federal authorities at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport after exiting a flight from Havana, Cuba, officials said. It's the same airport from which Pan Am Flight 281 took off more than 40 years ago.

Additional details on Soltren's apprehension were not provided by authorities.

Soltren "will finally face the American justice system that he has been evading for more than four decades," said U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara.

According to a December 1968 indictment, Soltren and three others -- Jose Rafael Rios Cruz, Miguel Castro and Alejandro Figueroa -- conspired to hijack Flight 281 on November 24 of that year.

1. Wow, we're really making headway in closing all those decades-old cases
First Roman Polanski, now the JFK hijacker.
What have the authorities been doing for the last 40 years? They could have arrested Polanski anywhere, anytime. I suspect it was the same with this guy.

Maybe we'll find the Fugitive at last.

2. Weird, isn't it?
Is it a coincidence or is there some kind of pressure or negotiation going on?

7. Not Cuba, but we could have arranged for extradition with France
N'est-ce pas?

That was what was done with Switzerland for Polanski.

10. Generally France does not extradite its own citizens.
So that was probably not a possibility. Polanski is not as Swiss citizen.

12. Polanski has owned a house in Switzerland for many years
.(Disclosure: I am on the side of leaving Polanski alone after all this time; I honestly could care less about prosecuting him.) He could have been arrested years ago, however. He travels to countries around the world that DO consider requests for extradition.

As for the hijacker, one suspects that our improved relationship with Cuba of late may have led to a deal. Just wondering.

Altogether, I am making fun of this recent spate of arrests for very old crimes--things no one has thought about for decades. Now, bring us bin Laden to put on trial, that would be interesting.

19. The only point I was making was to the assertion that France
would have extradited him if we asked. We did. They won't. Polanski's house in Switzerland does not make him a Swiss citizen, nor obviously did it render him immune from extradition by the Swiss government. Polanski stupidly and arrogantly thought he was immune from our reach and did not bother to stay inside France.

15. Exactly. We asked. They said no.
As for Switzerland; international arrest warrants must be issued for a specific period of time. The U.S. had made various attempts to detain Polanski over the years when they found out he was in other countries, but he was usually back home in France before the U.S. could get the warrants issued again. His mistake this time was in announcing his attendance at the film festival ahead of time. The warrants were issued before he arrived and the police were waiting for him.

16. But Luis Posada Carriles remains free
Edited on Mon Oct-12-09 12:10 PM by TomCanyon
They love to capture left-wing radicals who hijack planes; but the main suspect in the hijacking and murder of dozens of passengers of a Cubana Airlines , anti-Castro right-winger Luis Posada Carriles, plane walks as a free man in the streets of Florida, or some other state.
