Bill Nelson: I Prefer Trigger To Opt-Out Compromise
Ben Frumin | October 12, 2009, 3:13PM

Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) said on MSNBC a few moments ago that he prefers a "trigger" option on health care reform -- of the sort favored by Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) -- to the new "opt-out" compromise -- which would allow states to individually opt out of a public health insurance option -- that is gaining favor with some Democrats.

"I think it ought to be available in all markets, each of the states," Nelson said. "The idea is, let the free market competition really determine what the rates are."

Nelson said the "trigger" plan "would be more important" than the "opt-out" compromise, saying that "otherwise you could have a state (that) would say, well, the insurance companies lobbied that state and they just completely did what the insurance companies wanted and took away the public option."

Nelson also said he expects the Baucus bill to pass the Senate Finance Committee tomorrow: "All the Democrats will vote for it to get it out of the committee. And I'm very hopeful and I'm very optimistic that Olympia will as well."

Nelson also had harsh words for the health insurer trade group AHIP's audit of the Baucus bill, saying that "you have to look at who produced the report -- the insurance industry did."

Fuck you Bill. You and that C-Street Cargo Cult you belong to. You only want to kill the public option. A trigger that never gets pulled is the quickest way to do it.

12. Nelson Got Heckled at the FDP Convention
The Florida Democratic Party state convention was this past weekend and Senator Nelson was practically booed. When he took the podium Friday night at the informal chair's reception, people starting chanting "public option." The next morning, he addressed the crowd at our general session and again, had people shouting at him about the public option. I think it was kind of rude and a breach of decorum to be interupting him like that, but he's been kind of wishy-washy on the whole public option thing.

On the other hand, when Congressman Grayson got up to speak Saturday, people cheered. You had attendees from all around the state chanting his name.

back to Senator Nelson, this quote is a gem:
otherwise you could have a state (that) would say, well, the insurance companies lobbied that state and they just completely did what the insurance companies wanted and took away the public option
You mean kind of like you are doing now, Senator?

20. A failure for whom, though? Only us. The insurers and Congresscritters did VERY well.
And the Baucus bill will transfer more wealth to the insurers.

Not our wealth, though. That went down a black hole in Iraq that leads back to Blackwater, Halliburton and other companies owned by Dummya's friends.

Not our children's or grandchildren's wealth. That went to the financial "industry" and will be going to China, for interest on our obligations. We are up to AT LEAST great grandkids and great great grandkids now.

On the "bright" side maybe global warming will make that moot, 'cause we robbed future generations of planetary resources, too.

15. Nelson didn't support triggers for flood insurance for his rich friends
Edited on Mon Oct-12-09 07:27 PM by SandWalker1984
Nelson didn't call for triggers, or opt out - opt in for flood insurance for his rich friends in Florida owning coastal, waterfront properties. They have access thanks to Bill and friends to cheap, SOCIALIZED, FEDERAL flood insurance.

People owning million dollar plus ocean front properties should buy their own damn flood insurance in the private market that Nelson loves so much. Hey, if the private market is good enough to screw us working class Americans for our health insurance, it should be good enough for his millionaire friends, right?

22. Let the south "opt out", and feel the WRATH of its citizens.
Southern DUers need to be especially vocal
and IN YOUR FACE with your local and national
representation.

If the south turned republican due to it's
objections against civil rights legislation,
now is the time to turn the tide and demand
equal opportunity for health care.

24. Yeah, that'll work.
So yeah, we red staters have *been* especially vocal and in your face. It gets us death threats and vandalism and we still kept pushing. We fought to help elect Obama and donated to the Democrats in blue states that we thought we actually could help win. (Franken anyone?) We've fought as hard as we could to get health care for everyone.
You're correct that we would need to be wrathful at the republicans that opt us out. What you miss is that we're going to be twice as wrathful at our allies that would throw us under the bus to save themselves.

I speak for all the Democrats I know around here when I say triggers or opt out would be the end of our association with the party. I'm not voting purely against my interests no matter who the candidate is and I'm sure as hell not giving money to people that think I don't count.

"equal opportunity for health care." Unless you're from a state that doesn't give us electoral votes. Then your life and the lives of your loved ones are less important than proving a point. Be sure to vote for us next time and good luck with that not dying thing!

Screw triggers and screw opts in/out. Health care for all or we become the new party of IGMFU.

26. Your allies wouldn't be "throwing you under the bus".
Your elected representatives would.

I'm all for voting DOWN any healthcare bill
that doesn't include every American.

But short of enforcing National Health Care
via martial law, it doesn't look like your
reps will fight for it until they have no
option.

When people leave their states in search of
health care, or are forced to pay higher
rates than states with the Public Option,
your "dems" will get off the fence and ACT
like DEMOCRATS.
