AP sources: Afghan commander frets over corruption

By LARA JAKES (AP) – 25 minutes ago

WASHINGTON — The top military commander in Afghanistan says rampant government corruption may derail the fight against the Taliban and al-Qaida even if as many as 80,000 additional U.S. troops are sent to the war.

U.S. officials briefed on a still-secret report by Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal say he wants more troops even while warning they may not protect Afghanistan from turning back into a terrorist haven.

Officials at the Pentagon and White House said McChrystal has outlined several options — from as many as 80,000 additional troops to as few as 10,000 to 15,000. The general favors compromise of 40,000 troops.

The officials described his request on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.

WASHINGTON – Rampant government corruption may derail the fight against the Taliban and al-Qaida in Afghanistan even if as many as 80,000 additional U.S. troops are sent to the war, the top military commander there has concluded, according to U.S. officials briefed on his recommendations.

The conclusion by Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal is part of a still-secret document that requests more troops even as he warns that they ultimately may not prevent terrorists from turning Afghanistan back into a haven.

Sarah Chayse, the former NPR reporter, gave a report on her time spent in Afghanistan in '08 working with community co-ops. She said that the Afghans were very glad to have the Americans come in at first, but the Americans did nothing to stop the corruption. In fact, it got worse under the Karzai regime. So, the locals turned to the Taliban to help them fight the corrupt police, government, and militias.

The Graveyard of Empires.

Edited my comment about the chickenshit UNreccing my rec.

4. Don't Fret McCrazy--- Its OK to worry!!
Your job at Halliburton, Exxon, Boeing or corporate amerika is still safe when you retire.

Your Boss the "Present Occupant" has the faith of the angels in you.

Don't worry about the Mayor of Kabul either,. He is a reliable puppet.

Just put on your blinders and go out and massacre a few (insert racial epithet here.)
