Driver suspended for wearing pink tie for cancer
Source: Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A Springfield Mass Transit District bus driver has received a one-day unpaid suspension for wearing a pink necktie to help raise awareness for breast cancer. The driver, 46-year-old William Jones, had to serve the suspension, but his action led the transit district to agree that employees could wear pink on Fridays October in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Jones, who said he planned to file a formal grievance, said he has had a number of relatives who have battled cancer, including a grandmother, a sister, several cousins and a niece.

Linda Tisdale, the district's managing director, said employees must ask in advance before wearing any deviation from the standard uniform.

1. Surely a reminder of the policy would have been sufficient.

8. Maybe he used up
all of his warnings beforehand. he is a union worker so I suspect there is more to this abbreviated story than we know.

12. No, not that they are crafty
there are a ton of hoops one has to go through to even get suspended from these jobs. At least that is the case where I work where we all are union.

10. There are some occupations where these cause symbols may be out of place.
A bus driver wearing a pink tie, added to a rider who does not know what the pink tie denotes, will raise questions.

The last thing you want a bus driver doing, instead of minding his driving, is proselytizing about a cause for which he is deeply committed toward raising public awareness.

11. We really don't need more awareness.
We are already "pinked" to death in October as it is.

It was dumb to discipline the guy, but really, wearing a pink tie isn't really some noble thing. All the pink ties in the world aren't going to get a mammogram for a woman who can't afford one, or treatment for a woman with cancer who can't afford it. Nor are they going to stop a really aggressive cancer.

We need to eradicate disease--not get bombarded to death one month a year with messages from other people to remember to get our boobies squished.

13. Somewhere along the way . . .
. . . I got my ribbon color decryption chart mixed with my terror threat level colors and I would have either asked the guy, "Why the pink bow tie," or just have written him off as one of a vast panorama of kooks.

Probably the latter.

18. Amen to that. Other diseases, including other cancers,

could use some of the publicity that breast cancer gets. I think everybody has the message about breast cancer now.

It has helped me to remember twice this month. You want a cure, pay for the science involved.

20. I used to wear a Santa Claus tie with my uniform.
I was an airline pilot.
Every December I'd bring out the navy blue tie with all the Santa faces on it.
A lot of the guys did that.

Somethimes I'd hang mistletoe over the cockpit door.
The passengers loved it.
;-)
No static from management.
