Rome rules on admitting Anglicans
Source: bbc

Groups of Anglicans will be able to join the Roman Catholic Church but maintain a distinct religious identity under changes announced by the Pope.

The Vatican said the new rules follow requests from Anglicans wanting to join but retain their liturgical heritage.

It comes amid splits among Anglicans worldwide over the homosexuality and the ordination of women.

But Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams said he did not think it was a "commentary on Anglican problems".

1. So Catholic tenets against gays and women are important
Edited on Tue Oct-20-09 08:33 AM by Fresh_Start
but other aspects are merely guidelines which are flexible when its convenient.

So nice to have it openly confirmed that bigotry is their most important common characteristic

3. Very well stated ! Bigotry, the most important common characteristic.
Yes, I'd say that sums up the Pope's decision quite well.

6. Right. Transsubstantiation is now just a theory, apparently.

18. Now accepting "cafeteria" converts
Dogma is not important, as long as you're a bigot. - Meanwhile Catholics who question positions on birth control, abortion, divorce and women priests are being to told to leave if they can't live with the rules.

2. Anglican and other non-Catholic priests have been becoming Catholic priests for a while now.
If you're called to the priesthood, you're called, even if the religion to which you were originally called succumbed to the heresy of equal rights for all human beings.

Mighty nice of the Catholic Church to have been so broad-minded as to have taken in those who want to fulfill their call while staying true to their faith in inequality and discrimiination.

If hetero men don't have a special place in God's love and God's hierarchies for all eternity, what is the point of religious faith anyway?

If you really need this, you need help, but here it is: :sarcasm:

20. Anglican priests have always been Catholic priests...
..they just haven't been Roman (i.e. in communion with the Vatican) Catholic priests.

Rome and Catholicism aren't one-and-the-same...just ask the Eastern Orthodox.

priests for a while. Thanks for the information.

I know of Eastern rites Catholics, from the same part of the world as the Eastern Orthodox, but I didn't think Eastern Orthodox were anything but Orthodox. Do you know if they are one and the same?

4. Why would Anglicans join a church where so much "ephebophilia" among church officials went on?
Edited on Tue Oct-20-09 09:09 AM by closeupready
Does the Vatican really think people are going to risk the safety of their family members and children to join a church whose membership continues to decline precipitously in light of the scandalous behavior of an unknown number of priests and bishops?

7. Pope Approves Plan to Allow Anglicans Into the Fold
Source: NY Times

VATICAN CITY — In a move expected to cause confusion within Anglican and Catholic parishes alike, the Vatican on Tuesday announced it would make it easier for Anglicans uncomfortable with the Church of England’s acceptance of women priests and openly gay bishops to join the Catholic Church.

A new canonical entity will allow Anglicans “to enter full communion with the Catholic Church while preserving elements of the distinctive Anglican spiritual and liturgical patrimony,” Cardinal William Levada, the prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, said at a news conference here on Tuesday.

The move creates a formal structure to oversee conversions that had previously been evaluated on a case-by-case basis, including those of married Anglican priests, who are permitted to remain married after they convert to Catholicism. Called Personal Ordinariates, the structure will consist of local Catholic faithful overseen by Anglican prelates who will provide guidance to Anglicans seeking to convert.

Under the new regime, former Anglicans who become Catholic can preserve some liturgical elements of the Anglican Mass.

8. Lets just gather the misogyny and intolerance
I guess it's a holy call to gather the sacred hatred of women and loathing of gays under one big, heavenly blanket.

(And I would bet some of those disgruntled Anglicans have small boys in their families.)

10. This is getting really nasty. It's becoming more and more clear
that the Vatican's focus is on reinforcing its own authority more than anything else. While married Anglican priests are welcomed with open arms, American sisters who suggest in private that there is room in the Catholic Church for married and female priests are facing persecution.

11. This is just plain disgusting:
Asked at the Vatican news conference what would happen if an Anglican congregation led by a woman priest wanted to join the Catholic Church, Cardinal Levada smiled and said, “I would be surprised” if that happened.

12. It's almost like he forgot to add, "... because we have painful ways of dealing with such people."
Seriously. Smiling in response to such a question is completely inappropriate. Shame on Levada.

Just how incredibly dumb do you have be to lie about a matter of public record in a nationally televised speech introducing yourself to the entire nation while accepting McCain's offer of the VP slot?

See, now you made me all nostalgic and misty.

Gee, how I hope she runs again! (Calling Katie Couric, calling Katie Couric...)

14. I'm Christian and what is happening here is ~ $$$
$$$'s that the Catholic Church is losing because they are so restrictive on their membership requirements.

Follow the money and most issues can be "understood."

15. But they've always been restrictive, so if they are losing money, it's not because they're MORE rest
restrictive. It's some other factor.

That's why I think the pedophilia that went on for so long and has been documented has led to membership declines. They are opening up because - you're right - they NEED MONEY!!! $$$! And they are not prepared to sell off assets, such as all that gold or the masterpieces.

19. It should be noted that the Anglican Church
has become more open to women's and gay's equality.

Personally, I find that more compelling than the institutionalization of bigotry against women and gays (not to mention against children for decades as they were mere playthings for the deviants in the Catholic church).

Catholics should feel free to become Anglican's since apparently the only critical difference is sustaining bigotry. The Pope just waived his hands to make all the other doctrinal difference go away
