GOP officials apologize for Jewish stereotype
Source: CNN

(CNN) – After his words attracted national attention and drew condemnation from a Jewish state senator, a South Carolina Republican official is now apologizing for co-writing a newspaper op-ed that described Jews as penny-pinchers.

James Ulmer, chairman of the Orangeburg County GOP, said he made a "great error" in the op-ed, which he penned along with Bamberg County GOP chairman Edwin Merwin.

The piece, which ran Sunday in the Orangeburg Times & Democrat, was meant to defend South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint's position against congressional earmarks.

"There is a saying that the Jews who are wealthy got that way not by watching dollars, but instead by taking care of the pennies and the dollars taking care of themselves," the piece read. "By not using earmarks to fund projects for South Carolina and instead using actual bills, DeMint is watching our nation's pennies and trying to preserve our country's wealth and our economy's viability to give all an opportunity to succeed."

DeMint denounces op-ed with Jewish stereotype

WASHINGTON (CNN) - South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint is denouncing remarks by two Republican officials in his state that were published in a controversial weekend op-ed which included a Jewish stereotype.

The piece, written by South Carolina County GOP chairmen James Ulmer and Edwin Merwin, was intended to defend DeMint's position against congressional earmarks, but it included a line describing Jews as penny-pinchers. Democrats have called on DeMint to denounce the comments.

"I just read the op-ed last night and the comments were thoughtless and hurtful," DeMint said in a statement to CNN Tuesday. "The chairmen have apologized as they should have."

7. Meh. These days, it's fashionable for the religious right to be pro-Jewish, I guess some of the
stories (and insensitiity) from the old days, when "Christians" were still blaming Jews for the crucifixion of Jesus, are still kicking around, though. I'd chalk it up to DeMint's being more up on the newer agenda--and also being more p.c.-- than is the state senator.

As far as I can tell, the far right never met a stereotype it didn't love and embrace, be it watermelons on the White House lawn or Jews'allegedly becoming rich by allegedly being cheap.

why I pray for them to convert to Christianity."

Their sense of irony is not at all refined.

They did not want Jews going back behind the Iron Curtain but they did not want them "here", either.

it's no coincidence that eveyone in PNAC was in one of 3 categories

defense contractors

zionists

"This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence -- economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every State house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted"

Dwight Eisenhower, farewell address

1961

every American has to ask themselves 'why would a 5 star general republican president say something like that in his retirement speech?'

11. That's the typical GOP apology
"I'm sorry if you were offended..." thus making it the offended parties fault that they're oversensitive or too PC to handle "normal" dialogue. They do this all the time instead of saying "I was a complete ass" or God forbid, "I was wrong and I am sorry" which put the blame where it belongs - on the idiot who is issuing the apolgy.
This particular apology in this instance is unusual. He must be so freaked out that he showed his true colors unintentionally that he's not following the GOP handbook on how to address being publically exposed as a bigot.

Edited on Tue Oct-20-09 10:33 AM by Ian David
This is a typical Republican-style non-apology "apology."

No.

You do not ask forgiveness from "those who were offended."

You beg forgiveness for being offensive, fucker.

They're not sorry.

Fuck them.

Ulmer e-mailed his apology to reporters late Monday. He said he "quoted a statement which I have heard many times in my life, truly in admiration for a method of bettering one's lot in life. I meant absolutely nothing derogatory by the reference to a great and honorable people," he said in the e-mail. "I hope that anyone and all who were offended by my comment will accept my humble apology."

<snip>

"At this time I wish to deeply apologize for any material included in that letter that would be considered antisemitic {sic} in any way," he wrote in an e-mail to reporters and other Republican officials. I have always abhored {sic} in the past, and shall continue to do so in the future, anti-semitism {sic} in any form whatsoever. I concur fully with the apology offered by my co-author, Jim Ulmer, and likewise beg that any and all who were offended will accept my deep felt apology."

Didn't your folks teach you any facts at all 'bout the beautiful Jewish people? What, were your kin prejudiced against Jews or summin'?

Besides, confusing Ben Franklin with all Jewish people is such an easy thing.

22. The comments are telling.
October 20th, 2009 11:42 am ET

I'm a Democrat, and all this drama is unreasonable. The guy was right. You maximize savings by watching the little things. Jewish people as a whole here in the U.S. for the past few decades have been able to successfully apply that logic.

October 20th, 2009 11:36 am ET

This is so rediculous. All you have to do now is live and you will offend people. Ironically, I think of "penny-pincher" as a compliment. Would you rather be called a spend-thrift? People just LOOOOOVE to be offended and make a stink about everything. Tells more about the person who is offended than the one who is doing the offending.

CNN's red meat for the day. No Palin comments so let's find something to get all the libs spun up so they can get their frustrations out spewing hatred to anyone on the right. Try reading the quote first.

Take a deep breathe. I really don't think he meant harm. He really hasn't understood the Jewish concept though...it's not because of their own doing they have success, it's because of God's promise for their blessing.....

Apoligize for what?? Why is telling the truth a cause for an apology? What's wrong with being a "penny pincher"??

So he had to apologize for calling Jews penny pincher. That shows the influence of Jews in USA. The other day a jewish scientist was arrested for selling national security secrets to Isreal,,but ballon boy was a much bigger story..enough said!

Not all jews are penny pinchers, some do waste money when they have to, even thou most of cheap with their money

when will we start being a nation of people and not a nation of "the jews" or "the blacks".

This is political these people are suppose to represent the people how can they do that if they still segregate us into a society of us against them.

And the coup d'grace....

October 20th, 2009 11:06 am ET

I am Jewish and do not find their comments antisemitic. It is a commonly attributed saying that even Jews themeselves say: watch your pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves. I am no fan of these two legislators, live in another state and don't know them, and am not a Republican, but this comment has been blown out of proportion.

Of course, similar comments are also made on this site.

They hear what their parents say and they repeat it, rarely bothering to meet Jewish people, and when do, they are surprised that they look "normal." And, often are not even aware what the phrase mean.

every single group of people that you could possible group together and label--including his own--made Archie Bunker seem quite open-minded and analytical. It actually helped me realize that all the labels and generalizations (including this one) were bogus (or, as Sessue Hayakawa put it, "Cow 1 is not Cow 2."). Therefore, I had to size up each individual based on his or her very own words and conduct and not draw conclusions about any broader group to whidh he or she might belong.

At some point between 18 and death, people have to stop blaming their behaviors and woes on their upbringing and start taking responsibility for it. I'm guessing the state senator is well over 18, so he many as well start now. Regardless of what his parents may have told him whem he was 3, he's his own putz now.
