Source: AP

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Jack Poole, the man who brought the 2010 Winter Olympics to Vancouver, has died. He was 76.

Vancouver Olympic officials said he died Friday in hospital following a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.

Poole spearheaded the city's bid for the Olympics, working for a decade to bring the games to British Columbia. He was also chairman of the Vancouver Olympic organizing committee's board of directors.

His death comes one day after the flame for the Vancouver Games was lit in Greece.

Poole was one of British Columbia's top real estate developers and known for his philanthropy. He was awarded the order of Canada in 2006, one of the country's highest honors. Poole leaves behind his wife Darlene, five children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

4. so how much money did his glory-hounding cost B.C. taxpayers?
Edited on Sun Oct-25-09 09:43 PM by provis99
I read they're on the hook for billions, when most Canadians won't even be able to afford to buy tickets to the games. The Olympics today are nothing but a bunch of taxpayer ripoffs and corrupt crony capitalists milking the system. Why do you think most Chicagoans were against Chicago getting the Summer Games?

5. "most Chicagoans were against Chicago getting the Summer Games" -- Link?
While there was a lot of concern about costs, virtually all of he polls I saw indicated Chicagoan supported getting the games by a margin of 2-1

7. If they did want it at the time
they would change their tune in a hurry. The stinking olympics are nothing more than a big taxpayer funded party for the rich. There is NO benefit to the citizens of this province. So far over budget by more than a billion and the government is cutting absolutely everything to pay for it. Vancouver is under lock down already, I feel sorriest for the people who live in the area.

Even if we wanted to go, we couldn't afford it.

6. We're paying for it already
the government is slashing spending to social programs because the olympics are so over budget... all the while snapping up venue tickets for themselves and their cronies.

I assure you there are not too many people who are pleased with the olympics around here. People are getting angry.
