Net set for 'language shake-up'
Edited on Mon Oct-26-09 12:40 PM by Posteritatis
Source: BBC News

The internet is on the brink of the "biggest change" to its working "since it was invented 40 years ago", the net regulator Icann has said.

The body said it that it was finalising plans to introduce web addresses using non-Latin characters.

The proposal - initially approved in 2008 - would allow domain names written in Asian, Arabic or other scripts.

The body said if the final plans were approved on 30 October, it would accept the first applications by 16 November.

Nifty and probably overdue.

It'll probably enrage xenophobes and the like, but anything that annoys them is good.

8. current keyboard
Actually, if you're using Windows, it's not that difficult. From the Control Panel, you add a "Japanese keyboard" and then have an IME (Input Method Editor) to create the characters.

I've done it for Mandarin, Arabic, Turkish, Russian and Greek.

I've not done it for Japanese, but I would assume it wouldn't be any more difficult than Mandarin.

6. watch for MASSIVE fraud
...some crook will get the Chinese/Arabic/etc. name for some legitimate business, clone the real website and start "selling" as that company taking in tons of credit card and other info, then the ripped-off people will complain to the legitimate business.

Repeat 1 Billion times.

9. No offense but that already happens.
Sure more characters allows for additional possibilities in terms of domain name but it is unfair to claim that this is enabling that type of site.
