(AG) Holder: We Will Seek The Death Penalty For 9/11 Suspects
Source: TPM

In a press conference this morning, Attorney General Eric Holder said he will seek the death penalty against five suspects in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, including self-proclaimed mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, when they are tried in civilian court in New York City.

Holder said another five terrorist suspects, including those allegedly involved in the bombing of the USS Cole, will be referred to the Department of Defense. All 10 are currently being held in Guantanamo Bay.

He said he is confident the trials will result in conviction.

"I would not have authorized prosecution if I was not confident our outcome would be a successful one," he told reporters.

1. Awesome - this is what we (progressives) have been saying since 9/11
Try the motherfuckers!!!!!

Personally, I'm nonplussed about the DP, but its not like I'm going to cry any tears for KSM and his band of merry fuckwads

6. Too bad these defendents don't have the knowledge to name names.
The linkages that need to be exposed cannot be revealed by these lower level operatives.

7. I thought Holder was anti-DP like me? Guess he's just following the law

..even though I disagree with it. I think there should be a trail of prosecutions beyond the supposed masterminds, but not sure there will ever be investigation. :-(

9. It worked when trying the blind Sheik in NY
It showed the country what and who he and his cohorts were up to. We also got important info by going through the U.S. courts.

12. Was Reported
on Nightly news this evening, Williams said that if any of the detainees are found not guilty after trial that they would be charged with something else. Tell me something, does that mean that if any one of them were innocent that they would never be able to gain their freedom. I mean if they are guilty thats one thing ,but what if one of them happens to be innocent. Don't like Terrorism or terroristic acts. I mean spend years in prison without being formally charged and go to trial and you are already guilty because Dubya and Shooter say so. Now some of them may be guilty, but those two clowns don't have a honest bone in their body. If one of them told me it was sunny outside i would get my winter boots and shearling out of the closet. Something to think about.Hope justice reveals herself to be true.

13. The CIA waterboarded al-Qaida suspects 266 times
Does Holder actually plan on using illicitly obtained confessions against these suspects?

15. and the right wing is screaming about this...
because the rule of law and fair trials aren't enough for them.

They prefer the rule of fear supported by their heroes like Franco, Pinochet, and Vidalia

17. Non-snark question for you.
Do you think these guys are going to get a fair trial in New York City? That's where they'll be tried.

Meanwhile, as the New York trials fill weeks and months of news cycles with lots of juicy imagery, the prisoners will become larger-than-life martyr warriors, and the next generation of terrorists will begin painting fresh bulls-eyes on the city that is trying them.

If I lived in New York I would be livid at the negligence and recklessness of these political show trials.
